Civilization 5 Announced

I know vbb can support polls ( which is what this board uses ) but wether they have disabled it or not I don't know.

You can't really see it in the bad quality screenshots but there's a hammer, beaker and I would guess some texture to make the gold appear like a coin. It looks like at least the hammer shows up even on the ones over tiles themselves though can't make out others.

Yeah, sliders are gone though. Seems culture will only expand your territory one tile at a time and you can use gold to choose yourself which tile, maybe hurry it along etc.. Lots of changes. I think I like that they're making gold play a bigger part in the game rather than basically work hard to keep 0 gold and all science for most of the game that it is now. More choices and decisions on how to grow.

Well it seems like gold and science are completely seperated now -- they are essentially two different resources.

Don't have sound at work, so I can't tell you if it is funny, but I did have a chuckle when I saw the faux Obama posters with Sid Meier's head. NO MORE TURNS! lol

Apparently, you can import Civ 4 maps into Civ 5. Pretty nifty.

The old lady is hilarious! lol
Marked out for Sid's cameo too.

I'm really excited for Civ5, especially after those e3 gameplay videos. I hope lots of you guys will get it too, would be fun to start up a pitboss game right away and see how people pick up new strategies on the fly :P

I wonder how square tiles will be converted into hexes; pretty mind bending.

Also, this seems to hint at the presence of all the same world wraps; after all, how could they have a Civ 4 toroidal map translate to a non-toroidal Civ 5 map, and so on?

Layoffs Hit Civilization V Developer

20 employees let go on at Maryland-based game studio.

July 8, 2010

by Jim Reilly

2K confirmed this morning that 20 employees have been let go from Maryland-based studio Firaxis, makers of the upcoming strategy game Civilization V. The studio employs roughly 100 people total.

"I can confirm that
Firaxis has realigned its development resources in order to streamline its development process, reduce costs and maximize the overall performance of the studio," Markus Wilding, Global PR Director at 2K said in a statement given to IGN.

Wilding noted that these layoffs will not impact development of any of the studio's forthcoming projects.

"These reductions will not impact Firaxis' ability to create and deliver AAA titles, including its forthcoming Sid Meier's Civilization V and Sid Meier's Civilization Network for Facebook."

Civilization V is set for release on September 21, 2010.

I doubt this means anything for Civ5 itself, at least the initial release version, but it's not a good sign for Firaxis or their publisher, Take-Two.

Do they even listen to themselves when they speak? When did it become so terrible to say: "We thought we could get better output with fewer developers, so we fired some?"
