Depend how many and how well he utilizes them. At any rate, attacking along that coast, I can easily retreat into mine or Mist's territory to repair, so I should be fine.

Injera Wrote:The Persia in that game was an absolute monster. It probably didn't help that I sold him a copy of all my doubled happiness resources. Still, he was a great ally until I started the Unity Project. Defending against rocket artillery in 1822 isn't much fun, until you realize you can worker-bait them into your infantry... rolleye

Persia was consistently one of the scariest AIs in all the SP games i played. Around the medieval/renaissance period, Darius tends to get the red mist and starts killing everybody.

Here's another thought- why do you think Seven let Helsinki lapse from ally status?

He doesn't think he can hold the city? He thinks he can get the favor back through military action? He can't afford to hold it along with his other CS? He doesn't care because the spice was pillaged? I have no idea...

Depends If you manage to get 3 promos to the frigates (60XP) you can give them +1 range. Then they can stay out of the crossbows range and hammer

Two of the other city-states he is allied with have Spices as their luxury resource, so it wasn't important to have those. I feel pretty sure he either:

A. Ran out of gold to keep the city in his camp.
B. Is anticipating killing Iroquois units within the next couple of turns and gaining influence with the city again.

I need to double-check Seven's gold, but I'm pretty sure he's at the edge of how many city-state allies he can actually sustain. Singapore briefly became unallied with him a couple turns ago. I feel he's going to go the Patronage route next, to help him maintain these alliances.

Range is not unlocked until 100xp - a tall order to say the least. Also, I'm more inclined to take Supply with my 60xp promotion rather than Bombardment/Targeting III. I'm not sure at this point, we'll see what the situation looks like whenever I do get frigates in the water.

Holy XP inflation, Batman! So how much XP does a normal combat net? Actually, how are promotions/xp handled in Civ5?
If only you and me and dead people know hex, then only deaf people know hex.

I write RPG adventures, and blog about it, check it out.

Its been about a year since I played, but I don't think XPs come from combat anymore...you get them from befriending militaristic city states now wink.

Nope 60XP are enough. Believe me I just had it last week. Took the 2 promos vs landunits and then Range.

depends a normal (melee)attack yields usually 5 XP Rangeattack 2 Killing a transporter by running over it 1 defending against range 2 defending against melee 4 or 5.

Promotions are at 10,30,60,100.... every city can have building that give you 45XP units. The wonder Brandenburger Gate gives another 15XP to units build in its city .

Melee combat generally nets 5xp per go, ranged combat (attacking and defending against) generally gets you 2xp each time. The promotions thresholds are 10xp, 30xp, 60xp, 100xp, 150xp....etc. So, roughly 5xp in Civ5 equals 1xp in Civ4. While this may seem like a lot of xp to get a promotion, keep in mind that it's significantly harder to kill units in Civ5; so most of your units will have the chance to become more highly promoted.

lol

I always love your posts Darrell thumbsup

That being said, for future reference, I respectfully ask that you and anyone else to take any further complaints about Civ5 out of my thread. I'm trying to actually play the game here nono

Hmmmm, this thread on Civfanatics and my memory say otherwise. Still, I guess we'll find out soon enough. Perhaps they changed it in the August Patch and I missed it?

At any rate, I hope you're right here. Range at 60 xp would be hammer

Turn 70

I micro'd Gibraltar to grow and produce it's archer the same turn, it's now starting a settler. The archer is headed south to gift to Mist. Sucre finished its Stoneworks and is starting on a second archer for Mist. I re-configured it to grow before completing it so it can also go into a settler next. Aurpolis is six turns from completing the National College. I would like to rapidly found my next two cities after it completes.

Things are looking more hopeful for the Rebel Alliance around the city of Helsinki:

It looks like Mist launched a major attack this turn, getting the city down into the yellow. We'll have to see what Seven is able to do on his turn, but if Mist is able to keep the pressure up, the city may fall. The Iroquois currently have the largest military in the world right now, but did drop behind America to become last in score as well.

In the north, I met the city-state of Singapore, allied with Seven with Pearls and 4 Horses. Hopefully that archer doesn't shoot me in the interim.

The city-state is Maritime, and I can't recall its personality.

I swallowed my pride and made Seven a new offer for peace:

If it will be interesting to see how he responds. If he does not, I pillage Singapore's pearls next turn and deny him some happy.

Also of note, he is out of the Representation Golden Age he was in, and is now making a more modest 23 gpt.

England has a coastal start bis, so if I keep going, I should eventually meet Yuris.

A note for later in the game, if I do go ahead with my frigate spam plan to counter Seven:

I could found a city on that 1-tile island and heal my frigates in it's borders, making the Supply promotion unnecessary. That would be pretty sweet jive

Next turn, my peace deal with Mist expires, so my gpt will start looking better. If he doesn't do it himself, going to offer sugar for gold.
