Thanks.

Game is on a bit of a hold, between bugged patches and travels/holidays.

Interesting to note is that I was reading some threads about Civ 5 MP games and it seems that Salt starts usually boosts the player that got it far ahead. That's exactly what happened here, making Azza leap to the lead pretty early (not saying he didn't play his start well, by the way). It's understandable. Salt is a 2/1/x unimproved tile (1/1/x plains + 1 food) that gets +1 food and +1 prod when improved (only needs mining), making it a powerful 3/2/x tile, fast to improve and not on a hill. Compare that to other luxuries, most of them giving +1 gold on the tile and +2 after improved (normally at Calendar or Trapping). Salt is just way better.

Azza is currently leading the game and I cannot let this happen (he has most cities, most pop and MOST HAPPINESS - at +13 happiness - no idea how that's possible). I'm debating if I should use my golden era (keshiks) to make Azza go down a bit (I think I could easily raze his 3rd and 4th city - losing half his cities certainly got to hurt) or try conquering someone and propelling me forward. I gotta think long and hard about this...

In the end, I think I'll try to do both.

If I understand correctly how production in Civ 5, Chichen Itza is mine. I'm second in every demographic category, always behind Azza. I have to attack him and I'll do it. Better to do something about it than cry later. Hopefully Pindicator sees the opportunity and comes to my aid. He could benefit greatly from the capture of Azza's second city. I'll settle the eastern jungle city with my new settler, rather than the city near Serdoa, trying to buy a lot of good tiles after I burn Azza's second city.

Ah, my allied city state is near Azza's third city. Anyone thinks Jerusalem's AI will help me?

Not very likely. They attack units trying to march through their territory and use sometimes their ships to attack other ships but CS aren't warmongers. They might fight against Azza's CS-allies but won't attack Azza himself.

Edit: At least in my experience.

It depends how close Jerusalem is to Azza. If you post a screen shot I can tell you.

Ok, after months of planning, execution and general waiting for the save, I finally did it. I opened the save to see my most incredible accomplishment in a Civ game ever. Hours and hours of my life where spent on this. And everything was about to be complete when the save finished loading.

...

And then I realized that I had selected the no pop-ups option...

Not a damn picture for all my work!! C'mon, I didn't ask for a Wonder Movie, just a picture. Couldn't you even give me this, game?!?!

Aaaaaaanyway, here's the thing inside my city (note, Harmonica's micro was heavily changed):

Overview of my Civ, showing ten turns to Chivalry! Another thing you should notice is my high amount of happiness, which will, no doubt, help me get to a boosted GA soon!

Nice. Well, happiness is meant to get consumed by building more cities. A Golden Age isn't really the end goal, just a useful milestone. Get expanding. smile

Yes, I know. I finished my settler for the 4th city this turn as well (a city that won't claim any new happy resources). One thing to notice is that 4 of this happiness is from a City State Alliance that I don't think I'll keep for that long.

Besides, next turn I'll get my 6th policy, finishing the Tradition tree. So my cities will start growing faster too.

Three tiles. The city state will attack. They won't be able to take out the city obviously due to the units they have.

I finally finished Guilds. Keshiks are very close. Next turn I think I'll enter my first Chichen Itza GA. I'll attack Azza, since he has the best demos and two cities that I think I can capture easily that have happy resources that I don't have. Besides, maybe Pindicator joins the fun for some revenge.

I'll post some pictures when the next save comes. My Capital is at size 16 already, growing sizes in 2/3 turns - that's Tradition finisher + Aqueduct + WLTKD (I managed to get loads of WLTKDs and City State influence by doing 1-for-1 happy trades with Oledavy - that helped a bit) working. When I get an university there, things will be pretty good, I think.

Well, time for an update of what happened in the last 20 turns or so.

It should be no surprise to anyone that my game plan was based around beelining Keshiks (after a CS beeline). Keshiks are extremely powerful in this game due to the fact that they are a cavalry unit (actually, they count as archery units, which means that spear/pikes don't counter them) that have a ranged attack. Cavalry units can move after attacking, so Keshiks are extremely deadly, since they can move, attack and move again, away from retaliation. That means they are not in danger of being destroyed by cities and any unit that attacks them, even ranged ones, have to be submitted to counter attacks.

Another of my plans was to focus my Capital on growth. The river tiles near it made it possible for me to grow the city to a very big size. That + Tradition an my first SP tree (aqueducts are really, really powerful, saving 40% food after each pop growth) + a pretty good use of WLTKD bonus food. Here's Harmonica at turn 74 (I'll post it at turn 85, last one I played too, so you guys can see how fast it grows):

After Guilds, I'm beelining Education. I'll keep those jungle tiles around, since they'll get +2 science after an University is built (jungles will be 2 food, 1 culture, 1 gold, 2 science when they get a TP). This city will also receive The National College, when I finish building libraries in all my cities. So, it'll produce an awesome amount of beakers.

Here's Harmonica now:

The University will aslo give me scientist slots, which will be useful, since I'm running out of good tiles to work.

A note about WLTKD. I made some awesome trades, especially with Oledavy and Pindicator, giving 1 unique happy resource for a resource needed for WLTKD and other deals. This way, I managed to get the bonus in all my cities. I also managed to get a lot of CS influence through resource quests. And this is all thanks to my brave trirreme, that managed to get contact with Oledavy and Jowy!

So, that investment payed out in an awesome way! Hooray me!

Here you can see my troops a little before I got to Chivalry and Keshiks.

I upgraded every horsemen, barring 2. Those 2 horses were actually very important, as I'll show later. As seen below, upgrades scale with game speed, which helped me a lot!

And here's demographics before the war and Chichen Itza GA:
