Shen is kinda bad now. He really does nothing in solo lane top, ulti doesn't really kick in until lvl2(200 dmg at lvl 1 ulti), his jungle is pretty slow with meh ganks, and he gets crushed in a duo lane against the current meta. IMO, Singed needs movement speed quints to play "properly", but he's a load of fun. Udyr top solo, sit in lane for a thousand years is pretty good, jungle good too. Udyr def. worh learning. Akali is only strong v certain teams, ones with little cc, or those that aren't too tanky. Out of the other free champs, I would say that Nasus and Kayle are probably the worst.. Kassadin is meh. Vlad and Ez are pretty good, and probably want to try only because you won't be seeing them for a while.
I would advice learning one of each class outside of jungle(jungle for at least a little while), as while playing support or tank in the games you will play in the beginning might feel really meh, it will give you a headstart in games in the future. Cheap, yet also not bad choices for each class would be:
AP:Annie
AD: Tristana(Use Facebook Tristana), Ashe
Support: Soraka
Tank: Amumu(although since he's kinda unplayable outside of jungling, iunno about this one...), Singed
If you get Annie, Ashe, Soraka, Amumu, and Singed, thats 4,950 IP(if I remember the prices right), which is about 2-3 weeks of on and off play, about half a week of constant play. With these champs, you are able to play any role, with good champs that people won't be all mad about.

If you have time, its worth trying every free champ each week. Even if you don't like the champ much, when you play against them you'll have a better idea of what they do and how to counter it.
Also might not be a bad idea to just practice last hitting in some custom games on your own, its not the same as a real game with someone harassing you but you may find it useful.

Meant to ask, is there a way to toggle off autoattack?

You can use the 's' key to stop your champion from autoattacking but you can't toggle it off I don't think. Riot made it so Sona (and Tf maybe?) don't autoattack and Riot said they might do a toggle for all champions but it hasn't happened yet.
Also I would add Nunu to the list of cheap champions to consider. You can jungle with him at very low levels and he is a lot better in lane than most people give credit to. Anyone over 1350 IP though I would try before you buy because some champs you just don't get on with.
Just tried out a lane Udyr game and I noticed that his turtle stance healing and mana regen works on wriggle's procs as well as your normal attacks. Suddenly his hilarious lane sustainability make a bit more sense.

I found about the S key when I was already level 30.
Would have been so useful when learning to last hit lol.
Atleast now I can quite decently last hit on the move.
Where can I find the LoLreplay files if I want to upload them online?

He's also a great champion to carry a game when Cull is trolling you. He really is one of the few champions that can carry a game, and that's because when you're farmed, Ghost + ult will let you escape 1v5 situations while you spam /laugh command all the way. Which means that you can push like a boss and not worry; with solo top farm you are unkillable.

Nasus can become absurdly powerful if you manage to last hit every single creep in your lane with your Q skill, Siphoning Strike. The ability to one-shot people with it is fun, but you are also slow and vulnerable to ranged champions.
Kayle has seen a rise in popularity for some reason. As far as I know she can be a decent late game carry with a bunch of support skills on the side because she scales decent, but her early game is weak. She'll be reworked soon.
Kassadin isn't maybe the most powerful caster, but he is capable of stomping hard on people if they're prone to making mistakes (ergo: solo queue). His mobility and single target burst damage makes him a force to be reckoned with, even if he's outshined overall by other casters.
Ezreal is the most handsome champion in the entire game and that's all the reason you need for playing him. Tough to learn because of the skillshots, but he tends to dominate his lane if he lands early Mystic Shots, and he has some escapability with Arcane Shift. Maybe a bit weaker late game, but still strong.
Vladimir is the bane of every solo queue player ever. Playing him will cause you to be accused of latent or even apparent homosexuality, being a spoiled minor, and an unskilled person who also robbed their own grandma. That's because once he gets past the troublesome early game, he becomes a steamroller once he gets enough farm. If he can farm, he tends to dominate games with his amazing sustainability in lane and survivability in fights. While dishing lots and lots of damage, too.

This is alright advice, although I myself would say that among good mages Ryze is still viable (not nearly as strong as he used to be after his remake, but you can have success with him), and you can try playing Garen as the team's tank since he's a fun pubstomper with lots of survivability that murders squishies with his full combo (but you need Flash to be able to get close. That, or the always helpful bushes.) There's also Alistar: most people build him AP since Dreamhack, but I advise against it if you start out. That's because you probably can't play LIKE Shushei, you can only imitate his build. Alistar works well with those items, but it also makes him utterly dependant on the timing of his ultimate. Building Alistar as a tanky utility is overall more reliable because you don't have to be 100% precise with your ultimate and getting an Aegis and some other cool stuff (Shurelya's Reverie, Soul Shroud, Randuin's Omen, Frozen Heart) helps your team too. Plus, you're also less reliable on farm, letting you roam the map to help your laners as you please.
Also: Zilean is an AP/Support hybrid who costs rather cheap, too (he works this way: gets lots of farm in his lane and becomes a strong AP mage, reverting into the support role at some point in the game, in a similar vein to Nidalee). He has an easy laning phase, helps his teammates lots, and his ult is a " Nope" button. He just doesn't really work as a full support (like Soraka or Janna) in my opinion, though, so don't try to go 0 CS for the entire game, you'll be disappointed.

Ok, summoner name is Jkaen on both servers, still struggling to work out how to invite people to a buddy list

Hmm played 4 games as Ashe v AI
0/1/8 Win
6/4/6 Loss
1/0/9 Win
1/4/12 Win
Now getting that many assists as what is meant to be a carry, does that mean I am initiating too early?
