Gillette Diplomacy Thread: Dossiers, Scheming, and Puppet Strings

Sounds fine to me.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

Scooter, you're so honest! The message sounds great to me too. Nice addition by Old Harry. It'll definitely be good if Menagerie can help keep an eye on that scout for us.

FWIW guys, after today I'm now 100% convinced that becoming close friends with Trolls longterm is pretty much a necessity. Our options:

TEAM: hahaha
Pirates: apparently a train wreck. I poked 3 of their members (Dave, Nakor, Luddite) this afternoon trying to get the turn thing resolved and none of them knew who was supposed to be playing the turn or if anyone did. So this team is a mess. Don't think we're missing much by not having contact with them.
Menagerie: Better than TEAM/Pirates, but still:

HitAnyKey Wrote:And here I thought we were having difficulty in our team with it mostly being just myself and Mortius being the active members. At least we haven't missed any turns. smoke yikes

That does not inspire confidence. Apparently LP is pretty absent right now, so it's basically Mortius + HAK running the team. Until recently their diplo turn-around was quite slow too. So this team doesn't inspire confidence.

Trolls: ...no complaints yet?

Really, our options for a good ally look really thin right now. So turning Trolls into a friend is a high priority. We'll see what happens.

I'd always thought you try to be friendly with your neighbour's neighbour, but if it's TEAM next to Trolls then Trolls might make a great friend...

I'd guess the map is like this as the TEAM warrior came clockwise while their scout came anticlockwise:

____Pirates_____
_M3______TEAM_
_Gillette__Trolls__

So Menage should have met Pirates by now shouldn't they? huh

I was actually assuming TEAM and Pirates are swapped, but this could be it too. We just don't really know for sure yet. I'd definitely prefer the above configuration where TEAM is very far away. I tend to think TEAM might be a bit closer than that though, otherwise being all "Jihad." against us is even more smoke than it already is.

TEAM had not met the Trolls yet, so they might have thought we were in Troll's position on the map when they killed our scout and went Jihad on us.

I agree that Trolls are looking like the best allies by far.

1:33 PM plako: Diplo seems to be having most delays in our team. Darell should take care of drafing you a message, but since the previous response I haven't seen new draft so I guess you still need to wait.
me: anyaway at least your team playing turns
1:34 PM smile
i was expecting pirates to be very active
plako: lol - Activity level has dropped, but Ithink we still have ~5 players someehat active
1:35 PM me: i might ask Wk whats happening with theyr team
you think that will be impolite?
not polite?
plako: Is he Pirate?
1:36 PM me: yup
1:37 PM plako: I see only problem, fi you haven't met them. Then you would basically had to stick with technicalities
me: we can take a few weeks pause if necesary
plako: Sure - Might decrease intrest level though on some players on active teams
me: well i can ask juts why they dont have mans to play turns
1:38 PM people
smile
our team going well
more than 8-9 people active
plako: So what do you expect from us? Border deal? NAP?
me: both
1:39 PM plako: and you've met Menagerie? anyone else?
We just met TEAM
me: and team
yes
those bastards
killed our scout
dotn trut them
1:40 PM wink
very agresiv move
plako: Still need some practice in anger management - It seems tehy're not very active in diplo. btw. I Forget to allocate our EPs and I think reallocating them on replayed turn is not kosher so you'll get another patch of them
1:42 PM me: can i save this somehow so i can public in our thread?
plako: Sure this is stored under "Chats"
me: ok
1:43 PM i am not in charge of diplomacy
plako: Me neither
Might had to do something though. Our response times are terrible as is
1:44 PM me: i can say yes it is
looks like you hide something
your team
plako: Not really - Just indesicion concerning wha to do
me: this is my tought
not my team
1:45 PM but i am very suspicious usualy
as you know
1:47 PM plako: Am I right guessing you want to settle towards Menagerie and settle a border deal with us wink.
1:48 PM me: I think that its not very hard to guess fro our first measge to you
from
both team will gain if we have a stable borders
1:49 PM and I can gues from map you have agold in the other direction too
1:50 PM plako: Possible yes - It seems we got on the toughest spot in this map both you and TEAM have apparently a bit weaker neighbor on your other side
me: well like free info
you have
1:51 PM plako: ?
me: gold
in the other side
plako: ok. thx
1:52 PM me: but for us its not problem you want that one
plako: hmm. we have some mapping to do there
me: its were you plant the city
gold its exactly
1:53 PM same distance between you and us
plako: It might be on your benefit to send a screensjhot of the area there. Maybe that could convince us to change our plans
1:56 PM me: what area?
with second gold?
1:57 PM plako: y
9 minutes
2:07 PM me: i ahve to discuss with team how to proceed from here
was easier if was just m

As you see i implied i know they have another gold, because we foud that are simetrical, but i think this will mean free info for the.

How we should proceed from now one?
Reply

Did our scout get as far as seeing the other gold? Or did TEAM kill him to stop him getting visibility? If we haven't seen it could it be Silver or Gems or not there?
Reply

well , we didnt see that but we can gues its like that.Thats the dilema we can tell about that gold and so similar are the picks and food resources so must be there.
