Barbs are much more fun in Civ 5. You actually have to defend against them (most of the gimmicky defense from Civ 4 doesn't work there), but they can't totally wreck your game based on a bad roll. I feel for you, man.
Sorry if you already explained and I missed it, but why did you prefer GP placement over 1S?

Ouch. We've all been there. Hopefully that's not a crippling loss, though I know every unit counts this early on.

Not crippling...er, unless a warrior now gives me the bum's rush.

One of these games someone needs to go Warrior first just to shake things up.

To get copper in borders to be connected immediately, I believe.
About the gems, your research into Iron Working can pay off fairly quickly and get you back on the road to Currency without too much delay if that new city can work a few of those gems tiles quickly. At this stage of the game working three gems would represent a significant chunk of the empire's commerce output. Channel it back into Currency and you aren't too far behind getting there I'm guessing.

At least we're Agg. If we weren't, we probably wouldn't have even scratched the lion.

Next challenge; how the heck do I cover a settler whipped next turn for Summer Knight?

You could take the guy from Fool Moon, perhaps, but then the city would be unhappy, right?
