cross-post (and I forgot about masonry).
I like Mardoc's tech path, and think I prefer manticores as well as units, but obsidian gates will hugely boost our movement. I think for that reason, we maybe should go for PttE.

The Guild of Hammers bonus also applies to slaved hammers, so it would give us more bang for our whips.
We can't count on a guaranteed Grimoire unless we really set things up carefully. Hyborem likes to run specialists, and if he pops out an Engineer he can insta-build the Grimoire. That said, summoning Hyborem is a good way to pump up the AC.
And Mardoc has a good point about fun being a good goal as much as optimal play.

I like Construction first, now that you suggest it. Including Masonry, maybe 2/3 the cost of Math, and on top, using it requires workers who are starting to get bored rather than 200h/city for Gambling Houses.
Assuming that we plan to keep settling, of course. But that seems like a good assumption.

Other random thoughts (mostly reminders for me)
-tar demons are SLOW, so i'd prefer not building very many temples (even with their sweet +2b)
-we've still got ~5 cities with purely internal routes, so I want to put up an offshore city. will be extra important for when we start losing routes as we declare war on people
-I think we probably have enough warriors to easily survive barbs in our borders - only 4 lizards and 1 golem floating around now
-don't forget we can only use gate units for attacking barb cities!
longer term
-first victim = elves? mostly because they're close and we'll have less friend anger (cause they're far from everyone else)...but maybe we keep them and lanun as trade route partners

which we can't do since we can't build navy except fishing boats for resources

Also, I think I want to declare on barbs sooner rather than later, if only to pop all those lovely dungeons. since we can't build much for emergency defenders, we may want to be cautious opening them though. something for our workers to do if bored (cover all tiles)
*edit: sorry for all the short notes!

The other thing is, we're currently at a breakeven rate of ~170 bpt. I would expect that to only go up from here. There are a lot of economic buildings still available. We're not permitted to build anything military, so we should keep getting those econ buildings. Once we stop trying to suppress our population, we ought to get a heck of a lot more commerce income, as well. Meanwhile, it's something like fifty tiles to the far edge of the continent, and we're currently moving west at zero tiles/turn . So I think it's quite plausible that we can manage to get all the Gate techs before we finish conquest. It just comes down to a question of order and emphasis, really.

I'd be willing to make a one-boat exception to the rule, myself. Just enough to be a ferry, not enough to ever be significant military.

Huh, it just seemed like 'everywhere' to me, I didn't actually count anything. But if you want to kick things off, go ahead.

I kinda want first victim to be Elohim, because we might have to wait 30 turns for Sanctuary, and if we do, I want to start the timer ASAP. That leaves elves and lanun as something to do while waiting out Sanctuary.

the archers will just sit in their forts, as will some of the gobbos (the rest can just suicide on warriors unless we can get a gate unit to earn some XP). I'll wait a few turns to get some more gate units to get XP - we can keep some lairs as XP farms.

1 boat exception seems reasonable to me.
