Epic 7: Compromise's Report

T-hawk Wrote:"Farseer slingshot" -- is that a reference to the novels by Robin Hobb? Incredible stories, those. (I don't see a connection regarding Metal Casting in particular, unless it's a tenuous reference to "Forging" from the novels...) I thought Vel over in Apolyton coined that phrase, however when looking for the exact post the first reference came from Fried-Psitalon here in this thread. I can't really comment on whether it is from Robin Hobb's novels (never having read them) but the post and some of the followups does refer to Forges. @mbuna120 - Yup that was sarcasm @jdtomi - I read the same thing somewhere. I created a Monarch/Terra game with only space race victory condition enabled, elminated all rivals on my continent, and hit enter for a looooong time. The barbs never built a spaceship. That's not proof, of course but I went to about 2400 A.D. Darrell
The rest of my report is now online. Feel free to follow the link in the first post of the thread, or to just click here .
I'm not sure where the "Farseer" name came from. I saw it when I was first reading about strategies, hardly ever used it, and saw a possible application here. About the animated gifs: I have some morbid fascination with the combat sequences (I appreciate the fact that with the later patches you don't know the outcome before it happens) and I've taken to snapping a bunch of screenshots from the battles as they occur. I finally figured out how to get the animated gifs to display in my report. Although they work fine on my computer no matter what the size, it seems like the total animated gif file size must be only around 200K for the image to load from my free webserver. A freeware package for creating animated gifs is whirlgif, though that may be getting a bit dated now. Edit: Help the barbs to space.... Talk about unrequited love!
Very nice read and very nice game. I find that oftentimes I get distracted from my overall goal, and it really hampers my play. You showed with your report that you were (for the most part) focused on your goal of Domination and it paid off with a very quick victory.
Minor nit: 16-9=7, not 5 regoarrarr Wrote:Minor nit: 16-9=7, not 5 That's what I get for writing it up quickly at the last minute and trying to reconstruct the information from screenshots. I wonder where I went wrong.... Edit: I think I messed up the counting at the end. Closer examination of the End of Game movie frame reveals 7 tiles (one of which was controlled by Alexander on the island NE of his continent and one of which was icy tundra on my own starting continent) not under my control. I've edited the report to fix that. Thanks, regoarrarr.
Out of curiosity I ran a worldbuilder game yesterday. Gave the Barbs a lot of settlers, and Mountain'ed the AI and human player off with just one usable tile and a settler. I also gave the Barbs most of the Techs. Started the game, pressed Enter a lot. What happened is: I built quite a few wonders and got quite a few Great People. The Barbs built only the Pyramids, no other wonder. Soon, almost all their cities was set to Research and, bunches of turns later, no change. So, do the Barbs have only a very small chance of buidling wonders? And what about Spaceship?
Nice game compromise! I think the Colossus was the wonder to get in this game, and probably helped keep your economy solvent enough to bash some Alex skulls.

Nicely done. After I finished my game (a much much later domination), and later found out from reading other reports that everything was reachable by galley, I was convinced the game could have been won using only axemen, catapults and galleys. That's how weak the AI is militarily on watery maps - even Immortal AI. I'm glad to see you went for it. Your play-by-play was educational.
Actually there was one island not reachable by galleys and I was afraid that I would need that to get to the domination limit, but fortunately it was not necessary, otherwise I would have not been able to win.
