in my HoF gauntlet pure fastest finish rush, i knew i needed a GE. i didn't want to chance it by running a forge in a contaminated GP farm, so i chopped pyramids and HG in the same city, and built a forge as soon as i could (during the hanging gardens i think). that city had only engineer points, and i actually slowed down scientists in other cities to be sure i got the GE as my second great person while GPs were still cheap. i then kept him sleeping for-freaking-ever, until i learned mass media. that was vanilla so great wall wasn't an option. part of the beauty of the pyramids was indeed that i didn't have to tech to democracy.
the only times i've collected enough cash to buy a huge chunk of the UN were on deity OCC attempts, since the AIs are loaded. i don't even try for the pyramids, but the nice ones often "you look like you might need help" me prereqs for democracy which is spiffy.
