I'm just not quite sure why would the Incan start be "second to Mali".
Mali has the whole of Africa South of the Sahara, and plenty of luxury resources to expand to 4 good cities, and even though you are behind in development, the huge difference is you have all the Europeans as your trading partners. Besides, immediate access to elephants means you could try to ally with the Europeans and oppertunistically steal the holy city, as elephants do better against camel archers than knights anyway.
Incans have a vast jungle and, if you're willing, the ability to attack and destroy the Aztecs (and the Americans, if it's the 18 civ version). That would take many centuries, since they start with Jaguars and Quechuas won't work. While you are doing that you also have to watch for the Japanese or Chinese landing on your puny little coastal cities with rifles (which I dealt with by drafting muskets, youch). While as the Incans, you're only hoping that the Europeans will contact you and that you will eventually be the first to reach some trading tech, democracy if you are lucky. I won a space race, but that was after 2000AD. The score was pathetic. In regular CIV, the only saving grace is the pathetic AI in playing the Aztecs and, if warlords, the awesome Incan UB.
Isabella only needs enough troops to hold against Saladin anyway, the rest of that large army is better spent attacking the French and Germans.

Calling Mali in 1000AD "behind in development" is severely understating the case, I think. Not only is it lagging horribly in tech, it starts with settlers rather than established cities.

You are hemmed in by mountains, you need sailing and galleys just to found a 3rd city. When you do found that 3rd city it has 24 tiles of jungle, so you need an army of workers- the result you do not have an army of soldiers and with Monty as a neighbor ...

I'm playing this scenario as a PBEM where I am France. I made peace with Saladin (human) early on and I don't think that he has actually added 1 tech the whole game ... his GNP is well negative - he appears to be heading towards a cultural victory. China (human) is leading in score, tech, growth rate, etc. Russia, India, Japan, England (all human) are competing but sometimes when I look at them I have no idea what they are doing.
I know what I am doing ... the AI Spain, Germany, Rome, Scandinavia have all fallen to the God King. I am thinking about settler spamming and sailing over to America.
If Saladin gets close to cultural victory, I will just send my forces rolling down there.

Bump
Not "on the verge" but this is close enough.
After 2+ of competitive "ladder" MP civ I have finally achieved the following:
I'm definitely not deserving of a top-20 spot (of course neither are about 5 of the other top-20 guys...and yes, we're all guys ![wink wink](https://www.realmsbeyond.net/forums/images/smilies/wink2.gif) ), but a month or so of solid play and some breaks going my way got me a steady enough rise in skill points for it to happen. I immediately screencapped the screen since I doubt I'll stick around long.

@sunrise:
No wonder - all you've done is farming noobs in CTONs while maintaining a high RD. ![wink wink](https://www.realmsbeyond.net/forums/images/smilies/wink2.gif) +20 per game brings you there pretty fast. Now get into the top 10 and stay there...

Ouch!
Hey, I try to play later-era games, but I can't change the ladder on my own. I played Ren Pangaea a couple weeks ago with Lestat and some noobs. It was torture.

This game ended with me owning most of Western Europe and having a very large standing army. China, India and Persia all say that they are getting in a position to attack AI Russia ... however, they all attack me and wipe out most of my standing army. France goes nuts, drafts rifles everywhere and proceeds to chase the 3 armies around and give them a good 'what for'!
China has tech advantage and I am pretty sure that I will be seeing tanks rolling into to battle my infantry. Alas, it isn't that pretty - nukes start flying in from the East and start devastating my production centers. This is the game that I really really started hating nukes in MP games. I could take being totally crushed in a stand up fight ... but losing production ability to a bunch of nukes was heart breaking. I moved my capital to Iceland, sent every last unit I had towards the front to fight and enacted an internal revolt scenario by releasing old French (glowing) cities to various AIs.

Finally! An RB guy on the ladder leaderboard. Just remember who you represent, now you have to get top 10 for sure ![smile smile](https://www.realmsbeyond.net/forums/images/smilies/smile2.gif) .
