Epic Fifty: Wine, Women, and Song! - Reports and Discussion

Hey all, I updated my score to 253pts; Rik pointed out I had forgotten the point for voting for myself! Too bad I wasn't born a girl... smile

Did anyone else leave this out? (Did everyone vote for themselves?) Just making sure, we should all score this the same way...

Many thanks to Rik for the assist. thumbsup

@Ronald -- I don't believe these forums will host pictures, so you'll need to put them somewhere else on the web. I use civfanatics for this; they haven't complained yet, nice of them. wink I believe also there are other services, like photobucket or imageshack, that will host your pictures for free, and then you can link to them from here. But I've never used either of those, so I can't tell you how good they are...

My report is almost completed at the following:

Final score is only 248, and I know that is worse then the other players posting in stories and tales. frown

Score was 249/250 if my vote counts. 1 civ abstained from the vote and another died. Of course it was a fun game, and an interesting setup. I never even considered trying to get more than 3 cities on the list, but perhaps even getting all 5 was possible by rushing the temple and library as early as possible. Thank you Sirian.

Okay! Fun game, here's my report from the field:

450 BC, starting turn:
I survey my lands. interesting... I have workers in the *middle of nowhere* building roads to *nowhere*, which is not so cool. At least I can get a city up there...

As for my cities... the royal palace is building a granary. Fine.

Pungent weeds is building a harbour... well, I suppose I can take a hint. That's (weed). I switch it up to a granary. I can also finish said granary in a single turn if I switch the two-shield tile with the Royal Palace. I put the RP's tile to a grassland, so it's settler in 4, growth in 3. I decide not to build the granary for now, seeing as how we have ridiculously few cities, and need more *desperately*.

The Holy Vineyards are building the lighthouse. Fine, great, whatever. It's for points, it's good, I'm building it. If we don't get it, we can put it to Mausollos or Oracle.

The Island Paradise switches to a worker. Why would we get a harbour when we've got those beautiful tiles to improve? Harbour comes later, when the city grows more.

The Finest Furs, on the other hand, could really use a harbour, since its two best tiles are the whales. I keep that decision.

I have a settler in RP. Interesting. The best place seems to be to the West, so I send it there.

For tech, I go straight for philosophy. Has anyone gotten it yet? I don't know. But I might as well make a grab for it. If I get it, I'll pick monarchy. If not, well, I have to research it anyway, and Mausollos is a decent fallback for wonders.

The galley, I send out to find new and fantastic territories. I'd love to put a settler on it, but I think that should wait for me to get a core worth having.

430: The spanish, in the north. Interesting. I trade Writing for Iron Working and 61 gold. I'd love to give her some vino (the 440 vintage was nice) but, sadly, we are bereft of a trade route. She doesn't seem to want to give anything at all for mysticism, so I trade her mapmaking for the wheel, masonry and 83 gold. (We'll see if that was a good move or not...

I see yellow to the east. Cleo? Shaka? We'll see.

410: I meet cleo. I trade her 14 gold and polytheism for horseback riding.

330: Stupid Furs builds a stupid harbour. I does nothing for me, stupid thing. Blah. I set them to building a settler.

310: I decide to build embassies to spain and egypt. Madrid looks like quite the city... Thebes sure doesn't.

Since my settler is coming in three turns either way at RP, I switch the bonus tile with PW, to get its settler here quicker. I need expansion, and I need it now!

290: My curragh meets the byzantines. They seem... pathetic.

260: Using Mausollos for a prebuild, I set my tech to literature in 17. (Mausollos in 25)

250: I find the world's supply of dyes in the north. Hot damn! I gotta get me some of those! Seeing the dyes, I abandon my mausollos plans. I'll still try to get the library, but use it as a prebuild for something else if I can't.

170 BC: Lighthouse finishes, right on schedule.

50 BC: My curragh finds the Zulu. I trade shaka polytheism for mathematics, code of laws and 143 gold. What a deal.

30 AD: Meet caesar. Sell him math for 159 gold. Meet mongolia. Don't sell him anything at all.

170 AD: Cascade. The temple of artemis and the museum of mausollos get swallowed. Zulus enter the medieval age.

190 AD: Spain declares on Egypt.

260 AD: Meet the X-man. Settled on an island I wanted... grumble.

320 AD: Isabella demands literature. I figure heck, she's a woman. I'm too half-baked to fight a war right now! So I cave.

330 AD: Byzantines demand horseback riding. Yeesh, these ladies sure are demanding these days. Better get then juiced up.

I notice the world has both Istanbul *and* Constantinople... strange, that.

370: I pop the great library. Yay for me.

450: Theodora *finally* builds a freakin' harbour. I give her wines. Let the song and dance begin! (No other women yet has this distinction) In what may be a devil's bargain, I trade the Zulus monarchy for construction and 223 gold.

530: Egypt gets the love!

640: Spain is boozed! Now on to the last contact... joanie, maybe?

740: Meet Cathy. Yikes, she's even further behind than Theodora. Needless to say, I have no trade route to her, so she doesn't get wines.

760: Isabella moves a swordsman into my territory. A single swordsman. Not that I'm militarily very worried, but I wonder what other purpose it could have but to declare on me within a couple turns. So I rush some walls, and phone her up and give her dyes and furs (in addition to wines). I move troops to defend the city.

780: As predicted, spain declares. Gaddammnit... Bowman wins, triggering a golden age.

930 AD: Leo's finishes at RP, Knights-Templar finishes at Uruk. Score!

950: Wines to cathy! Yay for everything!

On the minus side, Spain is going to declare again, for no reason I can understand.

960: With Isabella at the gates ( what have I ever done to her?), I trade her dyes, furs, invention and 12 GPT for Iron. Either she'll back off, or she's just traded me enough iron to upgrade my fortifications, which is really all I need.

970: As predicted, Isa declares on me. At least I got a couple knights and a whole swack of pikes in trade.

980: I get theology, and a scientific great leader! Hussah! Since I'm far enough ahead that I feel confident of getting every wonder from here on in (and moreso the more tech I have), I use him for a scientific golden age. My FP completes in Mari. Let's see what that does for me...

1030: Rome demands gunpowder... jeez. Can't a guy just live in peace? I cave, seeing as how I'd like a *diplo* victory and all.

In response, I sell persia gunpowder for 41 gpt and 140 gold, and then trade them wine, fur and dye for saltpeter.

1060: Miracle of miracles! A new source of Iron pops up right in the middle of my island! All of a sudden, I'm not crippled! Mein Fuherer! I can walk! The spanish sign peace, and they (and cathy) get wine once again. Ah, it's good to have some peace and quiet now and then.

1255: I nab the chapel at RP. Looks like my wonder hogging plan is working just great. Metallurgy before education... there's something wrong with this picture.

1325: The persians destroy the ottomans (!)

1350: J.S. Bach's cathedral built.

1365: I'm fretting so much about the romans getting the Observatory that I waste 180 bucks scouting their city. Turns out, it's coming... in 74 turns. Okay, so that's probably not going to beat my 12. Victory for the horde!

1370: Persia declares on the romans! Yikes, that ought to be interesting.

1385: Panic attack. Zulus declared on the Byzantines! They're going to *destroy* them! I think it's time to take some emergency measures... It will only take me 2 turns to blockade trebizond, their pathetic little port city. It will then be safe until marines.

1415: Copernicus' in RP

1555: Shakespeare's built.

1600 (or so): Zulus declare war out of the blue. Minor panic.

1635 (or so): Zulus back down, pay me 60 bucks in reparations. =)

1766: Persians bite the dust.

1802: I enter the modern age. My nearest rivals are... behind. Very far behind. I draw computers, which will stall this for another 7 turns, plus the UN build time.

1814: I get Fission.

1824: I finish the UN, and hold the vote without even taking the time to bribe everyone. My opponent is Shaka, who votes for himself. Everyone else votes for me. That's 4 women and 2 men, plus myself.

100 pts: Diplo

80 pts: 4 women voted for me

3 pts: 3 men voted for me (including me!)

10 pts: lighthouse

10 pts: suffrage

10 pts: Bach's

8 pts: 4 civs, each supplied with wine and furs.

15 pts: RP on top of culture (far and away, had to hold back lest I score a 20k victory!)

4 pts: Holy vineyards and Uruk both on top 5

10 pts: Top culture, again far and away

-0 pts: All women survive

250 points. Not bad. Not great, but I did hold myself back from forming "protectorates" with male-led civilizations just to get their votes. smile

Thanks for the game!

I didn't complete the game. Spain was big and the only way to get it to vote for me was to trim it down, and so I declared on her. I thought I might get her back to liking me by MA and MPP and it didn't seem to work so I gave up. smile

Personnal comments on my game (OK, I could have done this on my web page, but I somehow can't access to it now wink ):
1- Lots of women AI were killed. This annoyed me, and took me lots of score.
2- Why did I attack Rome!?!?!?! What would a oil ressource give me for a UN victory!?!?!?!?!
3- Could have given more wonders to other cities. This is more excusable:at least I got The Great Palace and The Holy Vineyards with it.
4- Why didn't I give luxury to Spain for 1500 AD!?!?!?!
5- I could have attacked Spain, anyway it voted for itself, so...

Well the other option was to pump another civ up. Read my report where I created the Persian monster to knock Spain from the #1 slot.

Hi,

thanks for the detailed report! Your game looks quite different from most of the others. Spain a monster; lots of war; top 3 cities were Babylonian... nice! smile

Too bad you are so dependant on MapStat, but thanks for participating in this milestone Epic nevertheless! I hope there will be no need for such a tool for Civ 4, although I somehow doubt it...
