So oddly, while life drain looks like a regular damaging power, it doesn't seem eligible for acting like one; I can give it the parameters of another combat spell, and nothing happens. I'm guessing something is stored in another file that determines mechanical effects of non-generic powers. Likewise, setting a power like fireball to overland means you can try to cast it on the overland map, but it doesn't actually do anything.
