[SPOILERS] WillPlunder as Mehmed of Arabia: Noobs meet world

Well in the spirit of healthy post counts, I thought I'd say I'm reading along and thanks for the pre game thoughts.

Good luck with the game smile

Are you going to update a lot with many many many screen shots?
I might decide to ded-lurk for a change ^.^
I guess this noob-friendly pitboss might be a good place for a noob to ded-lurk.

I'm committed to at least one update per turn, with moderate overview screenshots. No way do I have the energy to do Krill-style full-empire updatessmile And there are some amazing turn report writers on this site, and I'm not one of them. But my main goal here (more than placing well) is to report and stick with this all the way to the end.

If you're a noob, you're more than welcome to ded-lurk and give thoughts! For this game, I kind of want to avoid having a very experienced player guide me along in detail, as I think I'll learn by choosing my own destiny and seeing how it actually plays out. I'm just going to say what I think and I'm aware some of my analysis will be very wrong.

Cool! Then count me as your (first?) ded-lurker.

What are your thoughts on the starting position? Will you move 1W? especially with so many forests and bronze working at least 2 techs away, the grass hill of your starting position could prove valuable to avoid some wasted worker turns.

Welcome then! Hmm, that's interesting, I hadn't even thought of the starting grass hill as being a valuable early game tile. I guess the idea would be mining it, then using that to build the work boats? It does get 1C too, which is nice.

It really seems like finding an agri food source would help my start tremendously. But where could it be? I'm thinking NNE is not a grassland, just playing around in Worldbuilder, it doesn't create the circled splotch if it is.

Brainstorming wacky starts:

1. SIP. Hammers into worker while researching fishing. Full hammers into WB. Clam online turn 16. Worker out turn 20. Food improved on turn 16 isn't horrible. What's the worker going to do, still? Mine the pig? Alternatively it could grow toward size 2 building a warrior first, but size 2 vs size 1 is only net 1 hammer without anything improved.

2. Settle 1W. Worker into grass mine into WB. Can go mining first or fishing first to start WB earlier and delay mine a bit. Worker turn 13, clam hooked up at turn 22, city is 2 turns from growth, ready to work two improved tiles, and river grass mine isn't a bad tile at all at 131. Still we're quite food poor.

3. SIP. Mine the pigsmile

4. Move scout 1SE. There's a chance that would reveal food on the tile 3S. If not, settle 1N and hope one of those four possible tiles has an agri resource.

5. Move scout 1NE. This could reveal food in the tile NNE. If not, either fall back to something else or take a gamble and settle 1S.

6. Screw it, we're settling on the pig! Better be something good in the fog... [Edit, that still just gives a 2F capital tile, forget itsmile ]

Here's my sandbox file if you're interested in playing with it or correcting. Sandbox save

It seems this thread is already 5 pages behind in posts, gotta change that a bit.

Maybe before starting with trivialities, such as the best starting position, first tech and so, did you already think about the key to winning any MP game? Your city-naming scheme?

I was thinking about a combination between 1 and 2. Moving 1W, and settle on the plains hill (+1 hammer yay), and research fishing. Maybe build a warrior, to prepare for 2nd city. If I'm not mistaken, unimproved clams provide 2/0/2 (2 food, 0 hammers, 2 commerce), so you can at least grow to size 3 without a "loss" (assuming that you also work unimproved pig). After fishing bee-line to BW, and chop out the first settler. I have no idea when to build work boats though.
But I should do a sandbox to see how this goes. How does one determine whether a start is considered "good"? The turn when the 2nd city is planted?

More later, but my concern about 1W is that we already get +1 hammer if we're putting four hammers into a worker, and there aren't any 2 hammer tiles around to compliment the extra starting hammer from the PH and bring us to 4. (I think WWWN is a grass hill, not a plains hill, but not certain.) I'm also thinking about having enough cottages to be competitive in tech post Bureau / Academy. But yeah, it's worth simming it all out. I don't know what the best criteria are!

Good point on city-naming. Maybe a scheme is so good other people will let us expand just to see what names will come up next! (Or maybe we're on an island next to aggressive Rome, ded-lurked by Commodore.) When I thought I was going to be all alone in here I was thinking self-indulgent, like famous Williams. But maybe something connected to the "noob" concept like baby animals? Any ideas?

Are the plains hills considered to be neighbouring the river? Otherwise SIP vs 1W would be a different of not only one hammer, but also one commerce (I assume working the unimp. pigs in both cases).

In general I'm not a fan of plain hills since they "cost" 2 food to work, whereas grassland hills only "costs" 1 food, allowing you to work another 1f tile (e.g. grass-cottage) (if you are not limited by health or happiness). But as I said, I'm also a noob, so my thinking might be completely wrong ;-)

About the naming scheme...

Different Williams is cool ofc. Although I don't know many.
Maybe we can do something with typical noob mistakes/strategies? (noob-tube , heartseeker spam, unimproved grass, no siege)
Humanities greatest failures?
Famous board games?
Famous legendary city names, from legends to books. (el dorado, etc)
Pasta's and Pizza's
Just throwing thing out there.

Aw man, I was just gearing up for a fun game and now there's drama before a turn has even been played? Can't it at least wait until someone double moves a settler?smile

On the good side, maybe I'll get rerolled a wet corn start, haha.
