I thought they were mostly used because they were available. You might have an axe for farming/forestry/etc, so you could fight with one without being a full-time fighter. A sword is only good for killing people, so you'd only have one if you were rich and fought a lot. I also thought, though, that serious military forces relied mostly on missile weapons, spears and lances, and formation fighting. Sword and axe and such are mainly only good if you're in single combat, which professionals avoid. I'd be interested if you can prove me wrong, though! Can you recommend any reading for me?

I'm no expert, but I think you're mostly right, Mardoc. Of course, the Franks had their throwing-axes, and the Romans used the sword as their principal arm. But yeah.
