If we exclude all the Days of our AB drama ... nothing truly shocking happened in Week 1.

It usually takes two or three games to sort out who the contenders truly are, and there's often a shocking surprise feeding National Jump to Conclusions week.

Woo, even 1 quarter of offense is all we need to beat the Raiders.

With the Raiders leaving Oakland at the end of the season, this means that the Chiefs have an all-time winning record at the Coliseum - 21-19-1 (and 1 of those losses was a bullshit one in 2017 when the Raiders managed to run 7 plays in the final 7 seconds due to a ton of ticky-tacky penalty calls on the Chiefs). That feels really good since Chiefs-Raiders is one of the biggest rivalries in football.

With the Chargers losing to the Lions, this means the Chiefs are on top of the AFC West, as they should be.

Around the league, I haven't gotten around to checking all of yesterday's scores, but it looks like the Patriots smashed the Dolphins flat, as expected. The Chiefs are the only team in the Patriots last 4 games to score more than 3 points.

The Dolphins don't just look bad; they look like they're making a bid for "worst NFL team ever".

The 0-16 Lions still had Calvin Johnson and some other good players. Original recipe Buccaneers had a good excuse.

The 0-16 Browns might still be worse, but even that's starting to look dubious.

Tight game against the Ravens, but I feel good. The 4th quarter was sloppy and the Ravens caught a couple of breaks on those Hail Mary passes at the end, but the Chiefs dominated the other three quarters. Not a bad performance at all against likely the #3 team in the AFC. We're still without Hill, Fisher, and a couple of other pieces, so we're only going to get better.

Around the league, the Dolphins really do look like the worst team ever, the Patriots continue to not play real NFL teams, and the Browns are still, well, the Browns.

The Browns looked like they had talent, from my watching.  Their playcalling was ... strange, though.

Also, Days of our AB isn't going to end for a long time, isn't it.

They actually had a chance to beat the Rams there at the end (albeit the Rams, despite being 3-0, look like shadows of the team they were last year), but jeez, 4 straight passes at the goal line was not the best plan I've ever seen.

The AB situation wavers between hilarious and horrifying. Did you see his tweetstorm? Dude's not even in the league and still dominating headlines! I can't wait for a desperate team to offer him something.

Or he'll go play in the XFL.

Ugly, ugly win against the Lions - but a wild game.

Matt Patricia did a great job with the gameplan to face the Chiefs. He rushed only 3 guys pretty much all game, dropping fully 8 into coverage every down. It more or less did what I thought could not be done, and shut down Mahomes for most of the game (relatively, he still got more than 300 yards!). Teams had been trying to blitz him and get him with the pass rush, but that doesn't work against a QB as mobile and with Mahomes' arm talent - he's able to extend plays and then drop a pass straight to one of his receivers out beating the weak coverage. Instead, Patricia let Mahomes sit in the pocket practically all day but gave him no one to throw to. Meanwhile, the Lions exploited our suspect cornerbacks and ran the ball as much as they could. It was a sloppy, sloppy game from both sides, too, fully 5 fumbles in as many minutes in the third quarter. I fully expect the Patriots to come at us with this gameplan in December and January.

But there are bright spots. For one, the defense really stiffened in the red zone - the Lions reached it 4 times on their first 7 possessions and only came away with 10 points. For another, Braushad Breeland in particular made a great heads-up play on that 100-yard fumble return, first time that's been done in nearly 20 years. And, most encouragingly, the Lions still couldn't stop the Chiefs offense. Mahomes STILL scored 27 on them, and led the game-winning drive with less than 2 minutes to go in the 4th. That's why he's the MVP. Pretty good game on the whole.

Plus, that flip from Kelce to McCoy was, as the announcer so aptly put it, "sick!"

Oof. That stings.

Don't wanna talk about the loss right now, but I'll revisit this.

The Chiefs lost and the Dolphins didn't lose yikes.

I didn't follow the game closely, as I was out of the country, but what happened?
