i think the biggest area where my skills need improving is in the kind of planning you guys are doing where you look 20-30 turns ahead to plan out when you will obtain certain techs and when to build/move workers so that they arrive at the jobs exactly as you get the tech and don't have to spend time waiting for techs to complete.
as such i am reading your plans closely mackoti Wrote:SO GAVAGAI WINNED ALOT BUT HE DIDNT HAD ANY PROBLEM?
I checked the map stats in the tech thread - this is definitely a large map, so if Teddy's figures about typical Large map sizes are accurate then it looks like the map is a very large percentage water. Whether most of that is inaccessible, or maybe spread out in a huge island chain, who knows. Or maybe I'm entirely wrong.
mackoti Wrote:SO GAVAGAI WINNED ALOT BUT HE DIDNT HAD ANY PROBLEM? Turn 5 - 3800 BC The turn rolled over a minute after I woke up, good timing. ![]() Also, the case for settling on the pink dot as previously described by Dhalphir just got that much more convincing. ![]() I realize we didn't discuss where to move the scout, but it seemed straightforward to move there. Next turn, the scout should move north, which will reveal 1 desert hill and 1 plains hill (from my fog reading). On turn 7, the scout can move 7-8 to land on that desert hill and then after that potentially turn east to look out for barbarian animals. The demographics are shown below. The team that took an extra turn to settle likely has a completely landlocked capital. In fact, I'm a little worried that (assuming everyone has gold), they were somehow able to get that in their capital's working radius. ![]() Maybe I'll still be around when turn 6 rolls over, but I would suggest whoever is up first can play the turn for simplicity. After this turn, some teams will likely have finished their first technology, either Fishing or Hunting, so we should keep an eye on the scoreboard.
we COULD pick up the gold later with a city that includes the sheep, but I don't think such a city would be very strong given all the water it would have in its BFC.
settling on pink dot also has the benefit of maintaining all of those forests - it seems that is our plan going forward then - let's go for gold! mackoti Wrote:SO GAVAGAI WINNED ALOT BUT HE DIDNT HAD ANY PROBLEM? For most games, it's not really necessary to plan this much ahead. However, these kind of multiplayer games don't come around very often, and we can't reload or use world builder, so it makes sense to spend a little more effort in planning. When we start founding cities, for instance, we should never be asking ourselves "what are we going to build in this city" because we should have that all planned out beforehand (e.g. the first 3 builds of the city, including any potential tile micromanagement). Given that we're already low on commerce, and the fact that this gold is on a plains hill rather than a desert (means +1 production), the gold is very important to us. As such, I highly suspect we'll found "MIT" so that it can claim that.
Looking over our early game plans (http://realmsbeyond.net/forums/showthrea...#pid408377) , looks like we can now amend Turn 32 to include beginning to move the settler to the desired location.
I've been reading through a lot of player threads from _past_ Pitboss games. Nobody seems to have war on the brain for at least 50 turns. Even athlete's chariot rush on rego's second city in PB2 was past turn 50, because it was happening at the same time as whosit's buildup against Korea. With that in mind, what are the thoughts on going double settler? Is it worth it? I am saying this from the point of view of someone who lacks the skills to math this out far enough to find out what it would take. I guess it would depend on if we found a great site for it, but given that we are non-Financial in a game with a large percentage of people who ARE, I feel like we need to run some kind of gambit to make sure we compensate in other areas. Sure, we find gold, but mapmakers don't give one civ gold and no one else, so it's not really an advantage. mackoti Wrote:SO GAVAGAI WINNED ALOT BUT HE DIDNT HAD ANY PROBLEM?
@Dhalphir
Expansion isn't about fastest possiible settlers alone, in my opinion. If you plant new city faster, but it can't work improved tiles for long - thats not a good play. If you plant new city without proper military support - thats wrong too. There is some more but mostly, Expansion=settlers+workers+military. Now look at us right now, our worker already on tight schedule and after T32 he have to buid 1 more mine in cap, improve cows and gold and do some roading. And we didn't see Horses so far, but its possible we'll find it close enough to improve it too. So we are pretty short on workers. I'd prefer we have at least 3 workers before go for city#3. And I'm not sure it better, but I'll sim first settler after 2 workers for us, once we scout a bit more.
We definitely need at least two workers before we found our third city, preferably three workers. I would also want one warrior for each of the 3 cities, plus a fourth one that helps the scout in exploring (though he'll stay near our civilization, just in case barbarians become a nuisance).
Once more of the land is revealed, we can run simulations based on where we think the second city spot should go. I am currently in favor of that "pink dot" location Dhalphir proposed. Even though it has gold, I would make it a production monster. It would have EIGHT hills (2 shared with the capital, 1 as gold) and enough food from the cows and grassland farms. If we can get enough experience from barbarians, we might consider the Heroic Epic there. The capital can focus on the commerce. I'm really hoping we can find some more rivers soon. |
