I second the nice updates.

Quote:VS = Vassalage Savings = Bureau Upkeep - Vassalage Upkeep + Vassalage Units = 7 difference + 19 units = 26 gold per turn

A point on this though; I was under the impression that you don't pay 1g per unit(unless you're at deity or something like that), more like 0.6g per unit. Hence 19 units would only cost ~12gpt?
Reply

Hmmm, I thought it was 0.6 per unit on Prince... this is Monarch though, where I thought it was 1g a pop... I'm actually not sure now!
Reply

Apparently, units cost 0.8gpt on Emperor, 0.7gpt on Monarch, and 0.6gpt on Prince. The more you know!

So, my costs are actually:

59*0.5*(1 + 0.5*(1-0.53) + 0.25*0.53) - (19*0.7+6)*1.14 = 18.13ecpt and 6.5 hammers

Still less than 1gpt per city. Not bad. Still, this does make a difference... had I actually built the ToA in my capital, I estimate my income there would be about +10cpt, which works out to:

69*0.5*(1 + 0.5*(1-0.53) + 0.25*0.53) - (19*0.7+6)*1.14 = 25.17ecpt and 6.5 hammers

At that point, I think I'd rather have Bureaucracy...

Another paper pusher enters the fray:

estimating total beaker levels, translating 1.5*(gold reserves)=beakers as a rough estimate, we get:

dtay:
+paper (966), +philosophy (1288) = 2254 beakers up + 425 more gold than me
- aesthetics (483), -alphabet (401), -masonry (128), -monotheism, (193), -hbr (401), -construction (562), -iron working (322), -compass (644), -theology (805) = 3939 beakers up

2254 + 425*1.5 - 3989 = I'm ahead ~1098 beakers

gawdzak:
+ paper (966), +philosophy (1288), +literature (322), +education (3621) = 6197 beakers
- construction (562), -compass (644), -hbr (401), -guilds (1610), -theology (805), -banking (1123) = 5045 beakers and 157 gold

6197 - 5045 - 157*1.5 = he's ahead 816 beakers, with an unknown amount invested in Lib itself (its probably pretty close to done)

I get Lit next turn, then I save gold for Education for two turns. It looks like dtay has a leg up on me in the Economics race, and may even beat Gawdzak to it if he's not careful. Look at all those extra Classical war techs I have compared to dtay...

Current city counts:
Commodore => 21 cities, dtay => 23, me => 21

Gavagai and Mackoti both wardecced on HAK this turn. Gav declared first and got a great general, and still has #1 power by about 11k soldiers. So, I don't think he took many losses in his opening volley. Mackoti has about half Gav's power, so I think he just declared to get what he could. It looks like he'll get a few of HAK's northern settlements while Gavagai does most of the hard work but takes HAK's core.

Wow, HAK has lost 4 cities already, 3 to Gav and one to Mack. I didn't expect him to fold quite so fast... surely he saw this coming, being the one to provoke Gav to begin with?

More foreign tech updates

(using a factor of 1.2 instead of 1.5 to translate banked gold into beakers)

Mackoti:
him: +paper (966) = 966 beakers up
me: -theology (805), -construction (562), -aesthetics (462), -literature (322) = 2151 beakers and 607 gold up
------------------------------
966 - 2151 - 607*1.2 = I'm ~1813 beakers ahead. He just popped a GS this turn, though.

dtay:
him: +paper (966), +philosophy (1288) = 2254 beakers up
me: - aesthetics (483), -alphabet (401), -masonry (128), -monotheism, (193), -hbr (401), -construction (562), -iron working (322), -compass (644), -theology (805) = 3939 beakers and 467 gold up
------------------------------
2254 - 3989 -467*1.2 = I'm ahead ~2296 beakers up, although I bet he's pretty close to finishing Education by now. Maybe one more turn, just in time for me to get the extra KTB from it? Overall, I'm guessing we're even on total beakers.

gawdzak: (forgot he had music too)
him: +paper (966), +philosophy (1288), +music (966), +education (3621) = 6841 beakers up
me: -construction (562), -hbr (401), -theology (805) -banking (1123) = 2891 beakers and 461 gold up
------------------------------
6841 - 1768 - 1.2*461 = He's ahead 3397 beakers (plus whatever he has in lib). He's actually a lot more ahead than I previously realized. Note that he also has compass now, which made me think he was going for Astro, but now he looks like a lock for the Economics Merchant with his recent addition of Guilds.

I'm guessing Lib will pop in 3 turns; he probably just needs 2 turns for Banking and then one to finish Lib. So that'll be, like, 10k beakers up. Welp. I wonder if everyone will cancel OB with the guy?

Other News

REMAI are now in a Golden Age, switching into OR. I bet the fuckers saw I had Guilds are beelining Engineering just to spite me; I guess we'll see next turn. At any rate, I'm even more glad I didn't attack them. Gavagai finally took some losses; I'm back to #1 in power by a cool 90k. Portugal built the Hagia Sophia.

Domestically, I'm growing well, down to a 74 CY difference from dtay. I'm still #2 MFG despite multiple other civs in a GA, nice. I'm #3 GNP at 100% science on Paper, despite a solid KTB; need to work on that. Need more libraries!

I have a serious worker shortage in my northern core; 5 workers for 6 cities was not enough when all are growing into multiple food sources at the same time. So, I have 2 cities working *gulp* unimproved tiles for a couple turns.

Yeesh. All these borders ended up expanding all at once, I guess, and I did waste a lot of worker turns on the ToA, without really thinking about the fact that all those workers weren't really contributing to the area's tile development pace... that said, this is still bad work on my part. Luckily, my central core has finally finished improving just about every single tile, so I'm sending 3 more workers from there up to help.

I have 12 workers total; I think I needed 13, although its too late now. 13 woulda been only marginally better than 12, as the lost yield from working a few unimproved tiles for a few turns is less than the hammers I woulda invested in the worker. Still, I hate to slow a new city's jump start. In PB18 I underbuilt workers early, but then overcompensated by a couple workers later... maybe next game, PB24, I'll plan better and find the perfect balance?

I finally got my unit costs under control; Vassalage is providing 22 free units at the moment. Most of my forges are completing this turn or next though, and the HE is due in 5 turns... the faucet will be open again soon...

HAK, man, you should try to settle cities with first ring food... certainly not the first time this game I've seen this from you either... Honey Nut, Lucky Charms, and Fruit-Loops were the same... your cities will take a very long time to do anything useful if they need to wait for a border pop to even work a good tile!

And of course, who didn't see this coming? He got banking T145, so he can grab the econ merchan this turn. Mackoti and dtay both have Education now, so I'll get a nice KTB for it.
