Gillette Diplomacy Thread: Dossiers, Scheming, and Puppet Strings

I think that's a generally good start. Probably should do some dotmapping. Hard to do without knowledge of where copper is though.

Should we reply to menagerie's question about borders:
Quote:
By the way, maybe It could be wise to agree on some kind of border between us, so that both of our teams can feel a little more confident. We would not want to lead to a situation that any of our teams would feel pink doted and forced into an early war.

Taking into account, that we planted our capital two tile north from the expected by map makers start, it should be enough land between us to allow us to coexist peacefully.

We could say we won't settle more than x tiles towards them (where x is how far away the gold is) if they are happy to do the same or will that tip them off? The gold is nearer to us isn't it?

Ugh, totally forgot about responding to Menagerie. Need to send something to Trolls soon too. Thankfully Menagerie sounds a little undermanned at the moment so they probably aren't too concerned.

On the gold, it's closer to us yes, but like they said, they settled 2N so that's what does it. I'm pretty sure the gold is intended to be the exact halfway point between each team like it is on our border with Trolls. It's certainly on "our" side of the peaks though if we use that as a boundary which makes a great deal of sense. Something non-committal on the response would be best. We don't want to try to deceive them as that'll make them more likely to be upset if they see us settle the gold. The good thing about them settling 2N of their start is it makes it less likely that they would consider reaching so far for the gold.

Looks like all our diplo is waiting for a dotmap... I'm pretty poor at that (along with everything else) but I might have a go tomorrow just to see how badly you lot rip it to shreds lol

I think we can send the next two messages without a dotmap. I'll draft something up in the morning if nobody beats me to it.

Feel free.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

Posting this here as it's relevant to diplo right now, but should this go in turn discussion, team planning or it's own thread?

So I grabbed an overview and marked on where we've offered land to TT:

Then put the first wave of settlement on:
Red we've already decided, pink seems like a useful 2nd city, purple claims horse and stone (although I don't know which purple we want), dark blue and light blue secure borders (although I don't like either location for dark blue much) and other blue fills a gap

Then we fill in behind:
Do we want to squeeze more coastal cities on? We are Vikings :war2:

I've got a paint.net file if anyone wants an editable version of this.

Scooter - I'm having trouble getting dropbox to show these images banghead - is there a setting to make the folder public that I can't find?

Initial draft to Trolls to buy us some time. Any objections?

draft to Trolls Wrote:Trolls,

Apologies for a slower response than you're accustomed too. Given that the game was down for the weekend, most of our team took a bit of a break for the weekend. We're back in action now though.

While I don't think we can seal it in ink/blood quite yet, we are generally in agreement with your proposals. We are going to try to do some dotmapping, but the neutral zone is a generally good idea, and we also like having the NAP. Our only minor hesitation is some lack of map knowledge that we'd like to correct, but we see no serious problems with your proposal. As for the NAP, you're wanting a 40 turn NAP and not a NAP up to T40 right? Just wanted to make sure we're talking about the same thing here.

Thanks,
Gillette

Criticisms welcome.

Weird, I can actually access and see them, but the embedding doesn't work. Are you right-clicking on the images in your Dropbox and choosing "copy public link"? That's the way to get the correct URL.

My stab at a draft to Menagerie. I think this works ok? Open to other ideas if someone has a better approach.

Menagerie Draft Wrote:Menagerie,

Apologies for the slow response - our team took a little break with the Pirates downtime, but we're back in action. We certainly want to avoid settling in each others' faces. The last thing we want is an early conflict with your team! The main problem is our scouting knowledge in your direction is pretty limited - we primarily scouted east and the loss of our scout did hamstring us a little in the scouting department. As a result, without further map knowledge it's hard for us to agree on something real concrete. However, your knowledge of the area may be a bit better, so if you have any suggestions we'd be interested to hear them.

Odd that TEAM hasn't contacted you. Though talking and being nice doesn't appear to be their thing. Their loss I guess. smile

Thanks,
Gillette
