Anya flees behind the fire, taking an attack of opportunity from a tentacle as she does, but the blow is light and it doesn't grip her hard.

AOO hits 23, 1 damage, grapple attempt 6

Windbreaker screams in rage at his master's taking a hit and slashes at the tentacle, drawing blood from the rubbery flesh.

Eagle's attack =21, does 1 damage

Robern sees Niall flailing and leaps forward, slashing through the tentacle holding his comrade and eliciting a roar of pain from within the water.

Robern's attack =17, does 5 damage chopping the tentacle.

Lucas remains calm despite his tricky situation and strikes perfectly through the tentacle holding him, and then continues on cleaving through the next.

Good heavens. Natural 20, 20 confirms, 16 damage chopping the tentacle, then cleaving hits with a roll of 16, 11 damage chopping the second tentacle

The body of the man bobs back to the surface as he is let go and two more tentacles go hurtling toward the party. The three tentacles chopped writhe uselessly.

1 of the fresh tentacles strikes Lucas for light damage but still grabs on.

17 vs AC, 1 damage, 21 to grab

3 tentacles to Robern; the one is parried and the riposte chops it in two. One more misses entirely; the final strikes Robern a blow but he evades the grapple.

18 vs parry of 21, riposte of 15 hits and 6 damage chops the tentacle
5 vs AC, 19 vs AC and 2 damage to Robern but grapple attempt fails with a 7

2 tentacles to Niall; both miss.

The question is can I call him off ? I'm only allowed one trick for him at level 1 and he has "attack".

The standard heel/stop/stay should be default for a companion. The attack trick is to get him to attack things he'd not normally attack, like giant tenticular creatures of the deep.

Robern does not fear the tentacles any longer, and will keep fighting anything that comes out of the water.

One set of parry and riposte takes 2 panache points, so Robern is now out and can't parry any more.

Niall tries to pinion one of the flailing tentacles beneath his boot, then to slice it open with the tip of his estoc, but experiences no more success than when trying to bat it away. Swinging his blade back and forth before him, he retreats backward to the doorway.

Attack = 10 again

Really at this stage I'm unsure if retreating is really the right call, but my character is not that smart or wise so he might be feeling overconfident right now.

I dunno either, but I figure Niall is probably freaked right out, so would retreat regardless. Well, right now he's thinking of shooting at it from the doorway with his bow.

Niall's fighting retreat doesn't get him much; another five foot step and a rubbery bounce.

Windbreaker's is more effective; his casual talon swipe as he flies out of range hits precisely and lays open a nerve; the tentacle goes limp. With a victorious scream the eagle flies back to Anya, who is cowering beyond the fire.

Eagle attack =17, damage =3, tentacle is chopped.

Lucas spares a despairing glance back at Anya and coughs some blood; he's looking rough. He still manfully struggles up and slashes the tentacle grabbing him. It's a messy blow, but it does the trick. The bloodies ranger takes a five foot step back.

Robern's blood is up and he slashes at the tentacle that struck him with a flourish; for all his showboating, though, the strike is clean.

Attack=19, damage=5, tentacle is chopped

With a watery bellow the three remaining tentacles all converge on Robern; the sandy cave floor shines with strange blood. Two of the ropy limbs miss him but the third strikes true and grabs ahold.

Finally, Niall manages to skewer one of the slippery things.

Oops, I should have been more clear! I meant to take the AoO. That's okay, though. I think the tentacles are going down.
