The only kind of dump I know of is a full MySQL database backup, which I can make through the vBulletin control panel, but can't retrieve or download it from there without server file access.

Oh you can retrieve or download it without server file access. All you need to do is create the MySQL dump file in a path that's part of the website and get it with a regular browser.

Of course writing a dump file requires enough disk space to do this. Now the error message you posted earlier states that we are already out of space on RB so i doubt a dumb will succeed.

Your name is apt. I wonder if it saves passwords in plain text?

Usually dumps are plain text, so the answer is yes. BUT when nobody beside T-hawk knows path and name of the dumpfile which is required for retrieval i'm certain we are pretty save here. In doubt he can overwrite or delete the dumbfile after retrieval.

Profiles seem to be working for me now. I didn't do anything, so probably either our web host freed some space for us, or MySQL did something like clean up an old backup on its own. Get your avatars in now before it breaks again. tongue

On downloading a backup - of course you're right that it's doable if the backup lands in a web-accessible directory. But I have no idea how the server is organized, with the relative paths between MySQL and the web space, and I'm not inclined to start trying random paths like ../../www/forums when I can't delete the backups to free the space.

T-Hawk, not sure if you're aware, but the forums were down for 24 hours. (Database error)

Yeah but I couldn't exactly post about it. smile

I didn't do anything for the first error (MySQL too many connections), that must have been the web host if it wasn't MySQL itself cleaning up the connections. I did fix the second error (corrupt table), the admin control panel was working and I found the place where a command to repair MySQL tables is exposed.

Thanks for fixing it T-hawk.

Amusingly, I got all excited that the forum was back, then realized sadly right after, that oh, yeah, there isn't going to be any new posts because no one else could post either. lol

Oh good, can you dump the database onto the server anyway? Glad it worked out.

Yeah, I already tried in the wake of this problem. Didn't work though, threw an error that the directory is not writable by the web server process. I don't have file system access to make it writable or find another directory.
