Welcome to Realms Beyond Civilization!

Hello everyone. Another traveler who found my way here via Sulla's website. Have been playing since Civ3 but always in the 'SP vs AI opponents' bubble (which means I'm discovering there is a WHOLE lot about Civ that I just don't know)! Novice to average player--usually play monarch or occasionally emperor if feeling masochistic. Interested in joining (learning) succession gaming or maybe MP (although have a feeling in MP I may find myself being quickly exited!) BTW, info/tips/strategy found here is fantastic and am currently working my way through RB Pitboss#2 Spoiler thread by Sullla/Speaker.

Hello and welcome aboard!
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

Oh, an introduction thread! I didn't notice this before. Same old story for me - inspired to try multiplayer by Sullla's reports. I just joined Team Menagerie-trois in the Team Democracy game that's going on right now. Wish us luck!

Hello everyone. I'm not technically new, but it's been so long since I've been here I figure a re-introduction is in order. So what's hopping around here these days? I see a few familiar screen names, but plenty of new ones.

Long time no see, Whosit! You have a lot of catching up to do, if you feel like it. smile
I have to run.

Yeah, I hope to catch up. I've read a couple of the PBEM threads still going on and am hoping to get into a low-intensity game myself (in fact, it looks like I just missed sign-ups for one). Hopefully I'll soon be re-acquainted with what's going on!

Thanks! Yeah, I'll take a look at that, dazed. That was of course the game I was referring to.

Hello everyone!

I am in fact quite new here at Realms Beyond, but it looks like an interesting and pleasant community you have here. I was drawn here by reading Sulla's page about Civ4, and being a fan of the game myself I thought I would make an account here and maybe try a few of the RB style civ games. I would say I am still relatively inexperienced at the game, but I enjoy improving and this looks like a go community to do so in.
Also, if there are any TotalWar.org people here, you would know me as Nightbringer.
