You did everything right, but you should have called the police before talking to them. Mainly for your own protection if you would have been attacked and then being unable to call 911

Definitely true! In the moment, it just didn't even occur to me; if it had, there was plenty of time to get out my phone and call while I was still a long ways off. Fortunately, someone else (the hospice nurse) did call the police at around the same time I observed the fighting - although by the time a police car came by, it was all over, and the man, woman, and children were all long out of sight.

Don't worry I did the same mistake back in 2013, when something similar happened with me in your role of the story. I was attacked (the person was drunk), but only got a little bruise on one of my fingers. In the end what helped me was just being tall and therefore being able to keep the other person at distance. Somebody else called the police for me too.
EDIT: Also very important. When I came back home I immediately wrote down everything that happened like I remembered it. I did this in case the police, court or any other authority comes back to me for a witness report month later.

Wow - that sounds much scarier than my interaction! No one physically attacked me at any time, and the situation calmed very quickly after I had the man's full attention. I've worked in public libraries (everywhere from wealthy suburbs to inner cities and low-rent housing districts) for about two decades, so I've had lots of opportunities to learn what different kinds of volatile situations look like, and what tends to make them better and worse, so I think that helped me here.
Since the woman was already walking hurriedly away, just stopping and talking with the man was enough to effectively separate them, so their emotions could stop feeding off of each other, and once I made it clear I wasn't antagonistic toward him, his anger had nothing left to fuel it - because it was that kind of fight. I have definitely seen situations where being non-antagonistic is not enough though!
And yeah, when I got home, I wrote a description of exactly what happened as I remembered it (much more detailed than the sketch I posted here, of course!) so in the unlikely event I was ever asked to provide an account of the events, I'd be able to do so as faithfully as possible.

The wonders of social media. Finding out your girlfriend dumped you before she even messages you/tells you. (going from in a relationship with me, to Single on facebook)
What a world we live in folks.

Well know you see were her priorities lie. Don't be to down about it. From far away it looks like this might be a good thing that it ends. That's just not the right way to treat people.
Also reminds me again why I'm not on facebook.

Its part of the reason im ON facebook. Alot easier to see things like this coming then to just get ghosted (no messages/ect like you dont even exist)

Absolutely disgusting how those alt right fucks bully people. Apparently they've driven 3 other people to suicide.
No clue how much of an effect they had on this particular person's mental health, but I really don't want to look any deeper into this rabbit hole.

One sucide was a fake and the other two had obvious other problems before, especially Temple OS guy. I'm sure his goose was already cooked (95%+). I'm not quite sure about the other. (80%?)
I know that Chris Chan was attacked though and that probably pushed him over the finish line. In fact without the attention he would have run out of cash, which would cause her to be placed into a nursing home and him into a group home, before this happened.
