Alright TT I've got my turn under control. In the interest of helping this move faster (and perhaps end sooner) I played 30 turns with the intent of taking down Justinian.
I had a quick look at the demographics before I started, and I noticed we didn't have Shaka's graphs. This wouldn't be a problem with the massive EP advantage we have over the AI and this was soon corrected.
T336 - Steam Power completed with multiple coal resources popping up within our territory. Looking at the tech tree we didn't have too many options if we wanted to avoid Scientific Method and obsoleting our monasteries. I figured the easiest way for us to win this game would likely be a domination victory. We were currently in a position where we could get Military Tradition for cavalry really soon, and seeing how Justinian only had longbows and macemen I thought this was our time to conquer! First things first we need Music so I went ahead and picked that next.
I also noticed we could upgrade our macemen to rifles for 200g a pop. I made the most of the money from being in a golden age to upgrade our macemen (and other melee units) to rifles after they had been assigned the city raider promotion. Running research at 0% to generate this gold was still going to land us Music in 3 turns.
T337 - Sadly our golden age ended and we were hit with the harsh reality of ordinary performance. Actually since all the good work we put in earlier in the game this was still significantly better than any of the AIs. I found a great merchant hiding in our capital. Not sure what the intentions were for him, but I put him in a caravel and sent him off to Rome for gold.
T339 - In comes Music and I set research to Military Tradition. An election for the Apostolic Palace came up but it was obvious we were going to win that one.
T340 - Sure enough we were elected and our dear friend (and soon to be victim) Justinian voted for us.
T341 - Finally our military was on par with our research and our power graph was just about equal if not a tad better than Justinian's. With more units being produced it wouldn't be long before I felt comfortable attacking, and I had also decided to go after Steel next to upgrade our 15 odd hwachas to cannons for maximum devastation.
T345 - Military Tradition finishes and Steel is only 3 turns off.
T346 - The Statue of Liberty completes to give free specialists in all cities. I probably didn't do a very good job assigning them since at this stage I was too focused on preparing for our war.
T347 - The great merchant lands in Rome and I cash him in for 2850g. At this point I also found a great prophet hiding in Amsterdam and I burn him for another golden age.
T348 - Steel came in and I was wondering what to put next. I noticed there were quite a few custom houses built with practically no foreign trade routes. I decided we should get Astronomy to allow for routes to be made intercontinental. I finished upgrading our hwachas to cannons.
T352 - Another great prophet was born and I saved him for the next golden age. Don't think we would get too much from a shrine and we certainly didn't need Theology.
T353 - Our EP spending was so superior we can currently see what everyone is researching.
T354 - Astronomy in, Assembly Line next.
With our forces in place I declared war on Justinian. I decided to spread our stack to take his three border cities before they converge again to move north up the continent.
T355 - Finally JC converts to Confucianism. All it took was converting everyone of his cities to our religion...
T356 -
After bombarding Iconium's defenses last turn I suicided two cannons against the city to take it at no further losses.
I used one of our spies to put Thracian into revolt to remove cultural defense. Suiciding one cannon was enough to take the city at no further losses as well.
T357 - Another AP vote occurred and our second golden age ended.
I took Angora this turn but I did lose one of our rifles to an 85% battle. Up until this point we were doing really well (hadn't lost any of the 80%+ battles).
T358 - Justinian sent essentially her entire army against Angora to take it back. Unfortunately he just had the numbers and was able to reclaim it. However it just meant that he lost again the very next turn. Looking at our power graphs, Justinian was starting to look like he was in a whole world of trouble. Additionally we also spawned a great spy and a great general this turn. I used the spy and our previous prophet to start another golden age, and I put our general into Ivory Towers for the +2XP from here on out (it's been on unit production this whole time).
T359 - Justinian completed the Spiral Minaret this turn. Taking it will no doubt be nice for our focus on religious buildings earlier in the game. Things were starting to get a little out of hand happiness-wise since we were attacking our brothers and sisters of the faith. I whacked the cultural slider up to 30% to squash all unhappiness. I don't think this war will last too long anyway with our sheer technological advantage.
T361 - Assembly Line --> Scientific Method. I put this off for as long as I could but there is just nothing else to research that would be worthwhile. We hadn't built the Colossus in the end so the ramifications for getting this tech shouldn't be too harsh on us.
T363 - Forgot to take screenshots but I suicided 3 cannons on Trebizond and took the city with no further losses. We have no reached a bit of a choke point where it is safe to bring up our defending units since we are hardly vulnerable anymore of potentially being attacked at several cities.
T364 - Scientific Method --> Physics. JC is going after Communism so we should get the free great scientist for this tech. There is also plenty of oil nearby, although we lack the knowledge for building rigs. Amongst all the carnage Justinian finally lands a great general. It runs up north, perhaps to be planted in his capital.
T365 -
My 30 turns are up and everything is staged for further advancements up Justinian's territory. I have also been building galleons for transporting our troops overseas to our next target, perhaps Shaka. I figure we should aim for domination and will need another victim to meet the requirements. I just realised I haven't done anything about putting together a Globe Theatre City, so maybe the next player should look at that.
Well apologies for taking awhile to get this turnset done. The next player should look forward to destroying Justinian once and for good. I found it quite easy to play 30 turns under these conditions so perhaps the next person should as well. Thanks for reading. =)
