Settling on copper would surely be an option if we are really in need to connect it fast. (Which I hope we are not!) Otherwise losing 0/6-copper tile (I believe!) would be a compromise and that site also would not get cows in BFC. And because grassland cows is close to the best tile we are going to get in the near future...
Whether we want those cows in first ring or if 2nd ring works well enough depends probably on how much worker support we can comfortably get in place. Going rice first will surely be easier to organize, but if we can get cows fast online.. Original site 6 probably is better for our eastern expansion, but copper being a 0-food tile I kind of want both of those food resources though. Dry rice + grassland cows + PH copper brings only +4 food surplus and those Bananas will be useless still for a good while. Let's keep thinking!

Turn rolled and either Azza settled the first second city or his pop grew and the turn roll took three minutes. Then plako popped another tech from a hut.

Turn 31
Played quickly, because I have to run and only we and suttree were left to play. Never last to play yet..!
Lunch came back to safety, worker kept chopping.. Nothing happened..
Re plako:
It's kind of demotivating that one of the strongest players here first rolls a top pairing and then gets 2 free techs.. Oh well, there's nothing more that we can currently do, expect make the most out of our fairly crappy land.. Let's hope we don't fall more than an era behind..

Looks like Azza settled his second city t29, followed by Commodore t31, then Ichabandit, Retep, Slowcheetah and WilliamLP on t32. We're only ten turns behind... Also, these animals really seem to like us.

What should we have done differently to get our settler out faster?

I think going mining first instead of fishing first ( ) would have been a turn or two quicker, but it's mainly having a coastal start, not settling on a plains hill and no exp-bonus for the first worker... Azza is Joao, so TBH he's dawdling! Commodore is IMP, Ichabod and WilliamLP are EXP, so it's only Slow and Retep that aren't cheating.
We're also building a warrior, a workboat and two workers before the settler, so theoretically we should be quicker to have our next cities ready, but that depends on the quality of everyone's immediate surroundings. We've got long-term civics so I'm not too worried just yet.

Harry, we are working the 3 improved tiles, right? Just checking because grassland forest would not be terrible, but in this case mine is superior.
@Hydra:
1. Skip the 2nd worker (-2/3 turns)
2. Skip WB (have 2+ land-food-resources)
3. Beeline BW (chop more, although based on my testing it's not clear whether it really would have been better.. Luckily our game mechanic error did not really cost us at all or only a bit)
4. Have EXP
5. Have IMP
6. Pop mining or BW from a hut
7. Have a feasible plains hill start
8. Have a 6-foodhammer tile(s)
9. Have a riverside food resource (earlier BW through more commerce)
10. Play our start somehow better?
11. Something I missed?

Yep, if you look at the screenshot the production icons are bigger on the tiles being worked.

Whip earlier and stack whip anger?
By the way our second city can sit at size 2 with two whip unhappy and no MP unit - I think that's good for getting our third city planted... I haven't written it up yet though.
