Question: In SNES FF4, is there any benefit to combining all the Genji items or should I just equip that nice Dragon Shield for the Fire, Ice, and Thunder resists?

Nice write up as ever T-Hawk.
Is that the last one you are planning on doing?

I'm not that familiar with FFV but how are the low level challenges?

Hi everyone, newbie here.
Just want to ask things about the FF5 Old School Variant posted by Kylerean before:
1. Are "Raise" and "Arise" illegal to use in battle? The author of that report says that in the original FF1 in the FamiCom, we can't revive fallen allies inside of battle even through Life1 and Life2, is that correct?
2. Is it allowed to get jobs outside of the FF1 jobs ONLY for EXP and ABP training purposes? It's because I'm having a hard time training the FF5 Red Mage to get !DualCast, and I'm so worried I won't get it until after Bahamut that I just trained for ABP with the statues (Objet d'Art) at Bal Castle B2.
3. Given that I will replay the FF5 Old School Variant, how can I make sure I can get !DualCast before reaching Bahamut if #2 is illegal?
4. I just thought the Ninja can still wield two weapons as it simulates the way original FF1 characters do multi-hits IMHO. But the report says it's illegal, but I intend to bypass it solely for convenience purposes without betraying the original FF1 concept.
I'm doing the Old School Variant now, with the following party set-up. Note that I will be changing into the necessary jobs after the Bahamut quest.
Bartz - Knight (with Lv4 White Magic to simulate the FF1 Knight)
Faris - Thief -> Ninja (with Lv3 Black Magic and Lv2 Time Magic to simulate the FF1 Ninja)
Lenna - White Mage (with !DualCast to simulate Cure3 with 2 Cure2's, as FF5's Cure3 fully heals a single target, similar to FF1's Cure4; and Dia4 with 2 Cure3's used vs Undeads.)
Galuf/Krile - Red Mage (I actually started Galuf as a Monk, but I'm worried I won't be able to use Krile to her potential as a Monk, so I switched Galuf into a Red Mage instead)
Note that I am trying a no-Black-Mage challenge on both FF1 and FF5.

The FF5 old school variant was me, inspired by Kylearan. http://www.dos486.com/ff/ff1style/

That is correct. LIFE and LIF2 can't be cast inside battle in the original Famicom/NES version. There is no way to restore a dead or stoned warrior within battle at all.

I don't see why you would want other jobs for grinding? ABP is easy to get, the Statues work fine.

Up to you. I figured not since FF1 characters can't ever dual-wield, but you can play your variant how you like.

I decided against a more complicated rule set for jobs (since the item and spell rules already got pretty complicated), but it seems reasonable to bring in low-level white and black magic for the knight and ninja. I assume that Lv2 Time Magic is for Haste; IMO that is over the line with significantly different functionality as FF1's FAST. But I decided that in part to try FF5 without relying on Haste all the time, and in the end it's up to you.
Did you miswrite something about the White Mage there? I don't see what Dualcast does for a WM, she can just cast Cure 3 directly for the full heal?
Anyway, welcome to Realms Beyond! Hope you enjoy your adventure, and I'll certainly read along if you do any writeup of it.

It's just that I already sold my Coral Swords before getting to Bal, without knowing that they can still be useful for grinding against the statues. So I had no choice but to resort to the Thunder/Thundara Spellblade since there's no way I can acquire Coral Swords at this point. I'm currently preparing for Quelb and Drakenvale. I'm worried I may not be able to go back to Bal once I get out there for the sole purpose of finding Coral Swords.

I see.

It's because FF5's Cure 3 works the same way FF1's Cure 4 (Full Heal) does when used for a single ally. So in order to simulate FF1's Cure 3 (NOT FULL HEAL), I thought of using FF5''s Cure 2 TWICE to simulate this. Now, obviously, FF1's Heal 3 can be simulated by selecting FF5's Cure 3 as a multi-target spell.
Next, FF1's Dia 3 can be simulated by using FF5's Cure 3 against undeads ONCE, while FF1's Dia 4 can be simulated by using FF5's Cure 3 against undeads TWICE. That's how DualCast fits in.
Well, I have 800+ ABP on Lenna as a Red Mage now, 650+ ABP on Galuf as a Red Mage. So, no turning back now. I guess I'll try play Krile as a Monk next time, though by doing so, Krile's magic abilities will just go down to waste.
What I did for Galuf/Krile is to get a Lv5 Time Magic ability only for Haste 2 (though FF1 didn't have it) even if I can just set it to Lv4 only for Slow 2, which works in the same way FF1's Slow 1 does. But then, damage already done. Better luck next time.

Aha. The game does allow you to enter Bal again once you finish Drakenvale. Alternatively, ABP grinding doesn't *need* to be the Statues, there's other places too.

Got it, I follow you. I had that in my Red Mage rule set (dualcast Cure 2 to simulate Cure 3). Never thought of having a White mage do that, since grinding 999 ABP for a WM might be a bit excessive when she'll soon get the full-heal spell anyway.
Anyway, let's not keep getting lost in the details. The point is to play FF5 with the oldschool classes and abilities, whatever the nuances turn out to be.

Thanks, man. These posts have enlightened me.
Maybe if I can replay the variant (as I didn't have any record of my World 1 adventures in my present walkthrough) I can post my own rule set for the FF5 Old School Variant, which aims to make the Old School experience a little bit saner without betraying the original FF1 concept.
