Not sure how useful a warrior would be, don't we have pottery by then so surely a granary would make sense so long as Feros is building enough units for defence?
I think we need to work out fairly soon which civs are going to become allies rather than just tech partners. For all we no there could be a massive teching group forming elsewhere that could run away with the game before we have a chance.
My initial thoughts are that our relations with Babylon have got off to such a good start that we should definitely try to work to become allies with them. From some of the chat summaries it seems as if Mali might be a bit more cautious about committing to anything so early in the game but they are strong players with a good civ. The Maya seem to be quite friendly so far though I guess we should wait to see how the English respond. HRE seems to provide the missing link to another group of civs so we may want to see what comes of that as well.
Having two of our neighbours as good friends willing to help us if anyone DOWs would be ideal. I'm pretty sure we should be able to get Babylon (though we should probably wait a bit longer before we start formally proposing anything).

Turn 53:
We're only one turn away from pottery now. Cottages will be built on the grassland river tiles around the Citadel when the forests are chopped, and Feros will begin building a Granary when its current Worker finishes next turn.
Anoleis finished chopping the forest for Feros this turn. This will finish the Worker to completion, and the two of them will spend a few turns improving the terrain around Feros before one will move towards our third city site. The Workers around the Citadel are chopping forests towards our next Settlers and build cottages afterwards.
Exploration-wise, Jenkins is still moving west. I'm guessing we'll want to continue skirting Babylon's borders and eventually go further west towards Mali. Our Chariot SSV Normandy is currently healing from last turn's assault, and an as yet unassigned promotion.

I agree with Mania that out of the potential 5-state tech alliance we will need "closer" partners; from my personal conversations, I am inclined toward Maya and Babylon, but I haven't actually spoken to the other teams yet. We shouldn't be too overt in making anything akin to secret arrangments at this early stage, I think- don't want to accidently sow mistrust before the tech alliance has even gotten up off the ground.
Regarding the chariot, I assume we want combat 1, with the intention of eventually getting shock? Might want to promote it now to save some time healing.
Regarding the 3rd city, we obviously want a monument, but what about working a granary until one turn before size 2, and then 1-pop whipping a monument? I usually do that in SP, not sure that's the optimal play here, though.

Turn 54:
We discovered Pottery this turn. Research was set to Iron Working, which would require 17 turns on 100% science under our current output. Once we have some cottages and city 3 in play though, this should drop considerably. It's hard to say how many turns we need to stick with 0% science, but for now I'll recommend 3 and moved the slider down. If we end up needing more, we can slot in an extra turn down the line. So for now the expectation is that we'll finish the research around turn 75 or so.
We're have reached the end of our espionage on Babylon. Right now we have 40 points invested, and having demographics visibility requires 42. I set the remainder on the Mayans for now. We'll probably want to send them a quick message informing them of what we're doing, and let Babylon know we're almost finished spending espionage points on them.
For some reason, the mine tile at the Citadel was switched to a grassland forest last turn, so we are missing a few hammers. I'm not exactly sure why that happened, but it actually turns out this isn't bad for us since it means we'll reach size 4 next turn instead of T56. Once the Chariot finishes production, we'll start on our Settler for the third city. I'm getting the feeling we're a bit behind most other teams, so I'd really like to make a point of getting the fourth out quickly. It's been pretty busy over the last few days, but I should be able to have a good look at the turn plan tomorrow.
Feros has finished it's Worker this turn. Both he and Anoleis are building a farm south of the city. Once it is built, we'll swap to it from the Horses, and power our way to size 2 that way. It's about time we grow the city a little, and after we finish the Granary that's currently queued up, we can start using it as a military pump.
Both our Workers at the Citadel are chopping away. One will finish next turn, finish the Chariot, and overflow into the Settler. The other finishes the turn after that and adds even more hammers. Both will then build cottages on the tiles to give us a bit of a commerce boost.
Jenkins is still moving west. It appears the English are moving NE from where we met them. We may want to swap capital locations with them to get a better idea of which direction their starting position was.
I promoted the SSV Normandy with Combat I as suggested earlier, although it will need another turn of healing to reach full strength again. We should probably start moving it NE afterwards; I'd like to know where the Mayan borders are, and get a general feel of the land between our Civs.
It looks like we received word from both England and Babylon today as well. I'll paste the communications here for posterity. Bob is working hard as our diplomat these days!
Quote:Greetings friends,
I appreciate your patience as our team has temporarily had some issues connecting to the internet.
Although early, it never hurts to be prepared so i would like to start putting some concrete plans in place in regards to technology trading. There are obviously some key techs we will want to be focusing on within our group if possible. Please state your preference for research and we will try to find the best and most efficient path for us as individual civs and as a group.
Babylon: Writing -> Alphabet
Mali: Monarchy?
Byzantine: Iron Working?
England: Hunting -> Archery -> HBR?
Obviously these aren't exact trades and beaker values are way off. I believe this is the general direction we are heading currently?
We have recently met Inca and will speak to them to discuss whether they are currently forming or joining a bloc. We would appreciate the other members also sounding out Maya and HRE.
Your Friends,

Quote:Hi Kyan (and TT and Whosit!),
No worries about any delay; RL can't be helped, and I don't think anyone expects immediate responses in a game of this magnitude. I know my team doesn't
I will discuss with Mania and Moogle regarding what tech we prefer to research, but I think Ironworking sounds about right, given that I suggested it.
We are interested in meeting the Inca, and would appreciate any directions to them you have to offer. Thanks for letting us know you've found them.
A note, however- I would be wary of inviting too many people into our burgeoning tech "cartel" (we should call it a syndicate, sounds much more sophisticated I have spoken with Maya, and I think we are in agreement that the ideal alliance would consist of you, us, them, England, and Mali- all powerful techers with close borders (although England is a little bit of an outlier). Maya believes that more members than that may invite a dogpile against us by the remaining teams, and I am inclined to agree. Maya is interested in working with my team to secure guilds ASAP so that we can begin constructing cataphracts, with batches of them being gifted to alliance members. This plan appeals to my team for fairly obvious reasons, but I think would also benefit the entire group as a whole. Regardless of what we elect to do in the end, the immediate goal is for the five teams to all obtain contact with each other as quickly as possible, so that we can discuss in tech paths, strategy, and other concerns together, possibly in a group chat. To that end, I will send you and Maya screen shots showing how you can reach each other's scouts. Thanks to the maps you sent us earlier, my team should have contact with England in the next couple turns, leaving only Mali to go.
For the Spectre Council,

And England:
Quote:It appears as though our scout Jenkins, aided by our Babylonian friends, has come in contact with one of England's exploratory teams. It is our great honor to finally make your acquaintance, and hopefully this will be the start of a lasting, mutually beneficial friendship.

We were pleased to receive a report from our explorer Gulliver that he made contact with Jenkins, as arranged by our Babylonian friends. It is good to meet proper civilizations and not just barbs as we explore this world.
We have knowledge of a number of civilizations -- Mali, HRE, Babylon obviously, and are meeting Carthage soon. May we inquire which civilizations you have met?
We look forward to strong relations which will benefit both of our great peoples.

We have met Babylon, yourselves, and the Maya. We are hoping to make contact with Mali in the near future with the assistance of the Mayans. I'll be on chat for the next few hours if you'd like to talk in real-time, which I tend to prefer; I believe that I have already sent you an invite.
Hope to hear back from you soon! I think we will find we have much to discuss!

Okay, finished a chat with Cyne of England, as well as one with Kyan that gave us some new info.
First, news from Kyan:
* Babylon has met Inca, represented by Nakor, who was reluctant to make any definite tech / alliance arrangments on his own, but who stated that their civilization was interested in forming a group. I don't get the impression that they actually have one yet.
* Babylon has pointed the Inca in our direction, so we should be seeing them shortly. Not sure what we want to say to them, to be honest.
* Inca informed Babylon that Rome is apparently directly south of them- so SW of us. Babylon does not desire contact with Rome, so if we meet Rome first, don't tell them where Babylon is.
* Kyan is a little wary on England, and is toying with the idea of dropping them in favor of Inca. He says that his first chat with England mostly involved them asking him what he was going to research and then going silent.
* Kyan sent us an email confirming their interest in helping us beeline guilds This is working out a bit better than I had anticipated- never would of thought we'd actually have our neighbors eager for us to get our UU. I keep mentioning "gifting" 'phracts, but have made no solid deals- it's too early, and I don't to inadvertently promise more than we can deliver, a major concern.
Now, about the English talks:
* I dealt with Cyneheard, who is apparently not the regular diplo guy for their team. The conversation wasn't as "fluid" as talks with babylon or maya, but I think I still got some decent info from them and had a resonably productive chat.
* Cyne is doing exellent C&D work, and knew exactly what techs we had researched, including pottery. This skill could be an asset if England joins our alliance.
* Related to the above, England was aware of the alliance forming, but not to the extent I had been led to believe. As Kyan has suspected, England has recieved overtures from another party regarding an alliance; in this case, the HRE (and apparently only HRE). England was considering going through only one round of tech trades with the rest of us, but I brought up the point that a long-term alliance with set goals has a better chance of dominating the game, which they agreed with. They were also receptive to the idea of one goal being getting us to guilds quickly (possibly followed by a beeline to rifling to unlock their own UU)
* England is therefore currently considering joining the alliance on a long-term basis, but we will wait until all 5 teams have contact with each other before deciding on anything. If England delays commiting after we all have contact, then we may want to consider dropping them for the Inca.
* England has HRE to their north, Carthage to the West, and France to the East.
* HRE is not on good terms with France. Apparently related to border issues; details sparse.
The chat is saved as always, if you care to read through my clumsy yet marginally effective diplomacy. I kind of feel like Commander Shepard, gathering a team of allies and establishing dossiers

I think we have enough map knowlege to create a really primitive map:
Yeah, can't get much rougher than that. What confuses me is how everyone fits with 17 players; we have 16 now with Lobo dead, but it can't be that one row started with 5 players... perhaps the slight variations between capital placement meant that we all synch up on a diagonal, rather than horizontal or vertical, basis. Or something. Spatial reasoning isn't really my strong point :P
Also a less useless image, courtesy of Maniac:
This is their plan to meet Babylon and England (on the marked red tile), but we can also use it to plot how to move Jenkins toward Mali. I think Maya actually has plotted Babylon a little too far to the West, but whatever. Also, we should be getting images from Babylon, showing their 3rd city, and Maya, who will provide an up-to-date overview of their territory.

Interesting stuff there.
If the Inca seem reluctant to join the tech alliance, there's not too much we can do about it. We should at least get in contact with them though. The tech discount is always helpful, and perhaps we can exchange some basic map information. If Rome is south of them though, they wouldn't be our SW neighbors but Carthage's northern ones. (right?)
Having chatted with them, what are your thoughts on England Bob? From the sounds of it, they may not end up being as close an ally as Babylon would, but I'm not sure whether dropping them from the tech alliance would be a good idea, especially if they're doing solid C&D work.
Kyan sent us a message regarding our teching:
Quote:Revered Spectre Council,
I can see why beelining guilds would be important to yourselves. It is something i agree with. Maya seem very friendly and we'd be happy to get them on-board.
Do you happen to know where they've been researching so far in terms of technologies? Maths would be the best fit for them with our group but it depends on their current techs.
As you guys are after IW currently, please be very wary of maintenance costs. They are going to be collosal in this game. It's huge, toroidal and emperor difficulty. Your next city will probly end up costing you around 4.5 commerce per turn. As you currently don't have pottery you'll need to be careful not to over-extend initially as you will very quickly crash your economy. I expect many people to do this. Less but larger well built up cities will be the way to go Initially at least.
Inca are on their way to visit you from Genesis heading east. They are on our southern border.
Your friends,
Kyan

My response:
Quote:Esteemed Periwinkles,
We appreciate the words of council, and are carefully expanding to avoid being overly burdened down by these maintenance costs. Having recently discovered the secrets of Pottery, our Workers are now clearing some trees on what we hope will become prime real estate for our more well off citizenry. Levied taxes from this enterprise should keep us afloat for a while to come.
With our latest research efforts complete, our scientists have now started experimenting with advanced, tougher metals, hoping to unlock the secrets of working them. This is likely to be a lengthy undertaking, but one we are commited to making for the benefit of all of our allies.
Our scout Jenkins is currently still skirting your northern border. We have established a possible meeting point with the Malinese civilization to your west. If you are still interested in having us survey your lands for the presence of horse herds, and make note of features that may later be identified as iron deposits, Jenkins would be honored to do so afterwards.
It is also with great joy that our census of your lands is now complete. Having compiled the data, our next effort will go to one of our other contacted nations.
On behalf of the Spectre council,

I figured letting them know we finished Pottery wasn't a bad idea, as it will show up on their graphs next turn anyhow and it may alleviate potential concerns about our economy as well. It also looks like we won't have to do anything to contact the Incans either, they'll seek us out themselves.
Additionally, I sent a quick message to the Mayans letting them know we're investing espionage in their Civ for demographics visibility and invited them to do the same if they wished.
What do you think we should do with the SSV Normandy once we have found the Mayan borders? I'm a bit torn between scouting the NE part and contacting France and Maya's northern neighbour, or turning around and scouting the south a bit more.

And here is a initial plan for extending the turn plan. Pending approval, I'll start detailing it tonight:
Tech:
1: Iron Working, estimated to finish at around T75.
2: Masonry(?). If we can't trade for it, we should research it ourselves to hook up the Stone resource near Feros.
Citadel:
*Finish Settler for city 3 (T61) and get out some cottages (2 by T60, 3 by T63)
*Grow to size 5 then start another Settler when close to size 6.
*Chop the remaining inner circle forests to aid production, and whip the Citadel to finish the Settler, then regrow to S6 again the turn after.
*Work cottages as much as possible, swapping to mine tiles only for Settlers/Workers.
Feros:
*Grow to size 2 and finish Granary, then start producing military units.
*Add farms where possible for growth, but leaving the forested hill tile untouched. We'll use this to chop out a monument for City 4.
*Hook up the Stone and get a Barracks started at some point.
Third city:
*Get a monument out asap. Possibly chop a forest and/or mine a hill to make it happen.
*Get as many cottages down as possible, and whip whenever useful to aid production
Fourth city:
*Get out a monument and hook up the Copper.
*Build some farms to aid growth before switching to production.
Scouting:
Jenkins: Contact Mali, then return towards the citadel while exploring Babylon's lands.
SSV Normandy: Find Mayan borders and defog the land between us. Then explore either the area to our NE or SE.

We just received approval from the Mayans to get their demographics. They'll probably get ours as well after they finish their current target.
