Civ4 AI Survivor 2: The AI-stralian Outback

Cyrus is pretty weak for single player, though, but his AI personality of having a low (but not too low) peaceweight and being average across the board helps.

Cyrus did a LOT better this game than I was expecting.

We're finished now with Season Two of Civ4 AI Survivor. The Championship Game yesterday had a long slow spell in the middle of the match, only to become incredibly exciting over the final 75 turns. The finish was very close and not decided until the victory screen popped up. A great conclusion to a great season of games. thumbsup

Thanks again to everyone who took part in the prediction contest this year. I think that it went much smoother than last year, and getting to interact with Livestream viewers in real time made this a lot more interesting for me. I hope everyone else had fun. My website has been updated with links to the final standings and to all of the individual games. I'm also planning to put the championship on Youtube at some point next week, for anyone who has problems viewing the recordings on Twitch.

Hopefully we'll be back again next year for Season Three. [Image: cool.gif]

You can't say there wasn't twists and turns. I am impressed at how two AI which had the worst early game would have been the winner and runner-up without those culturing Incans; it says a lot about downfall of early war-mongering, at least in games with decent amount of land.

Thanks for organizing this tournament, and I hope to see it return for the next year as well!

Edit: Also thanks for trying to upload finals on Youtube, I don't know why but Twitch is a pain in my Macbook as it keeps freezing my browser or merely show static images.

Yeah thanks for running this again!

Like everyone else I'd have loved to see each game with a writeup but I understand that its a lot of effort and time and I enjoy the little prediction contest even if it went rather pear shaped for me this time around.

I'd like to add my voice to the thanks, it was indeed fun to follow. smile

Now, you said at the end of the last Stream that you were happy with the "number of war declarations" voting category... but from an outside perspective it didn't seem to work that well: results were pretty consistent, as illustrated by your own predictions which were always in the 11-15 range iirc.
I'd say the same about the "number of turns category": although there were a coupla outlier games, it strongly trended around the 320-350 mark, and thus predictions were centered around that mark.

If I may, I'd like to suggest alternate possible categories.
With winner, runner-up, and victory type, we already have end-game categories.
Only "First to Die" is a mid-game category.
Adding early game and mid-game categories might get people rooting from the get go.

Early game:
- AI with the most cities by turn 100 ? (ie, try and predict who'll win the expansion phase)
- Who captures the first barb city (a tad too random, but should generate some good laughs)

Mid-Game:
- Dominant religion by turn 200 ?

Now, a running gag throughout this year's series has been the "Wang Kon" troll award, and this could warrant its own official voting category.
Issue is how to determine the result:
- Not a democracy, you get to choose (issue, not fun for you)
- Setting up a quick vote at the end of the game (issue, results not instantaneous)
- Come up with a list of actions granting "troll points" (imo, bad idea, too much book-keeping)

I actually think that the number of war declarations category worked extremely well. It satisfies a number of good things at once for a scoring category: it's something that's fun to watch (we all like seeing the fighting!), it's easy to track, and it's a scoring category that remains relevant until the very last turn. We had quite a few situations where wars broke out in the last 5 turns of the game, gaining some people points and costing other people points. And while it's true that the values clustered somewhat, that's true of almost anything that we could choose to measure. We had 20 wars in Game Two and Game Four, against a mere 8 wars in Game Six and 6 wars in Game Five. I checked the average score in this category for the Championship, and it was 1.81 points. Not exactly a slam dunk result from a scoring perspective. I think this one is good and I'd like to bring it back.

Feel free to make more suggestions on possible scoring categories. We can discuss what we think would make the best possibilities. thumbsup

Finished watching the youtube videos for the Championship match. What an epic game! I'm hoping that I manage to watch more of these games live on the next edition.

Spoiler for the Championship result:
I'm happy that South America brought home the gold. dancing And that's with us only having one competitor!

That's pretty interesting data. Do you have an excel file of the data? If you already have it it'd be interesting to look at.

Is going "full Wang" a new troll term?
