Email from Austria
Quote:Well, my preferences was FRETGAI and I managed to get . . . Austria. Apparently I have horrible luck. I will now light myself on fire.
I wish I could tell you what my plan is, but I don't know what it is yet - I'm going to need to do some thinking and possibly do some online reading... But my first inclination is just to play aggressive and hope for the best - and if I get killed, well it wouldn't exactly be the most shocking thing ever. I'll likely leave Germany alone, as that's the one neighbor that (theoretically) should leave me alone. I can cross my fingers and hope Italy does something surprising and goes west, but I would not at ALL be surprised to see Italy order Ven-Tri in this case, so I probably need to expect that. I'm pretty strongly considering leaving Galicia open and hoping Russia does the same, and if he does, I'll take that as a "signal" for cooperation. If Russia and Italy both move in on me, I may be screwed, but that's a risk I'll have to take.
Note: All plans highly subjective to change.

I would just post the resolved actions rahter than dripfeeding actions

That's a pretty risky move by Austria to leave Galicia open, especially in a no-press game. He's right though that it's high risk high reward. If both of them leavev Galicia open then it's a pretty good signal for an early AR alliance.
I think I'd probably order not the full "Austrian hedgehog" which is Tri-Ven, Vie-Gal, Bud-Ser, but instead Vie-Gal, Tri-Alb, Bud-Ser - hoping for 2 builds

Some good initial thoughts from our Germany
Quote:I've never played a gunboat game before so this is new.
Germany are my favourite country to play in Diplomacy. I like that
they are able to affect the whole board, have plenty of options but
despite their central position are not often targeted early. So I'm
glad I got my first preference.
I think F Kie-Den and A Ber-Kie are no-brainer opening moves but what
to do with the army in Munich is a tricky one.
Here are my initial impressions of the other powers:
England: Early email exchanges suggest he is quite a nice although
somewhat innocent guy. I may help him into Belgium in 1902. I expect F
Edi-NTH, F Lon-ENG and A Lpl-Wherever-I-don't-care. A northern opening
would be awesome but I don't think he trusts France enough for that.
France: Is a very cunning player and I have to be on my guard. The
bounce in the channel seems standard. But my C&D department suspects
he may support himself into Burgundy as the safest way to guarantee a
second build (Belgium) for himself in the winter.
Italy: Early indications are that Italy may be considering an
aggressive non-standard opening to liven up what is otherwise the most
boring power on the board. I can't decide between the move to Piedmont
or the double army move to Tyrolia and Venice. The former would be
amazing the latter... a lot more likely. I'm secretly hoping for the
Lepanto in 1902 because I hate Turkey.
Russia: The Tsar is quite an unknown. I can't get a good read on him
for some reason. I have to expect he will open south, including trying
to sneak into Galicia and bounce in the Black sea. I can't think of
any good reason to let him have Sweden. But I suspect he (and Italy)
are the wild-cards in this game.
Austria: This seasoned diplomacy vet is going to need every ounce of
his experience to get out of his predicament. In a no-press game,
Austria is target #1. I will have to write angry threatening emails to
Italy and Russia to make sure they leave my buddy alone. Hedgehog
opening all the way methinks.
Lastly and definitely least is Turkey. I hate his guts. The least
trustworthy player on the board. I expect him to stab at least one
person every. Smy-Arm would be hilarious but not altogether
unexpected. Did I mention that I hate Turkey?
With all those in mind... I am considering bouncing Italy in Tyrolia
in the Spring and then sneaking into Burgundy after France moves his
army into Belgium in the Autumn. Although I run the risk of looking
like an idiot if I'm parked in Tyrolia in the summer.
I could instead move to Burgundy on the off-chance the Frenchman tries
to be too clever and doesn't support himself in there (or doesn't move
there at all). But in the end, I think I'm just too much of a pacifist
so I'll probably just move to the Ruhr.

I am confused, from that it seems like Germany knows who his opponents are

Yes that confused me too...
I emailed him about it but I'm suspecting that he's either talking about a different game? Or just trying to be funny

Confirmed that he was just making stuff up because he had nothing else to work with pre-1901

Got an email from I believe Turkey
Quote:Preferencelist was: FTGERAI
I expect to do everyone the standard moves for spring 01:
Russia I expect moves into GAL, RUM, BLA and BOT
Austria to do the hedgehog (TRI-VEN, BUD-SER, VIE-GAL) and Italy most likely to do VEN H, ROM-APU, NAP-ION
In the west I expect standof in BUR and ENG and England preparing to convoy an Army into NWY. And Germany will most likely move into DEN & KIE preparing to get HOL and DEN and perhaps block russia from SWE.

Gotta agree, I want that sense of humor to continue for the length of the game! .
