Uhm, on second thoughts I prefer ancient starts to begin with. Basically the settings you proposed in post #1.

We can go with earlier conflict, to not drag the game out too much, I guess.

I will say if you prefer different leader/civ combos, Brennus of Carthage vs. Alexander of Rome was an excellent balance and a lot of fun.
If only you and me and dead people know hex, then only deaf people know hex.
