The users folder will work in SP mode. It won't in MP mode. My location for one of the old RB Mods (Win7, CD install) is ...

C:\Program Files (x86)\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods\RB Mod 2.0.6.4b
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Just for completeness, it should be something like this if you are using steam:

C:\Steam\steamapps\common\sid meier's civilization iv beyond the sword\Beyond the Sword\Mods\<Mod Directory>

Thanks for helping!
Seems like I can't find the game straight away without going through any users folders. Could it be some kind of strange residue from when moving stuff over from the old computer ages ago? Is there a chance that I'll be better off reinstalling all of civ and taking it from there?

For completeness:
I've got an old cd-install and running win7 currently on the civ-PC

Whatever the path to your Civ installation is, you need to have the mod in the part of the path we've mentioned.

I don't know what to make of your path being C:/windows.old/users/program files/2K Games/Firaxis/SidMCiv4comp as that sounds a bit non-standard. Post your exact path, please.

If you happen to have a weird path just find the location of your Civ4BeyondSword.exe file and then put the mod in the Mods folder you can see from that location. So if your installation is really C:/windows.old/users/program files/2K Games/Firaxis/SidMCiv4comp you would then have a Mods folder at C:/windows.old/users/program files/2K Games/Firaxis/SidMCiv4comp/Mods where you would need to extract the mod.

Going from the other paths I actually would think that it should be

C:/windows.old/users/program files/2K Games/Firaxis/SidMCiv4comp/Beyond the Sword/Mods

If you put it into the first MOD-directory and not into the BTS one it won't find it.

True, the key bit is that Civ4BeyondSword.exe is in the Beyond the Sword directory.

Thanks for bearing with me.
My Civ4BeyondSword.exe file is at:
C:/Windows.old/Användare*/taotao/Programdata*/2K Games/Firaxis Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 4 Complete/Beyond the Sword/
*Användare = user and Programdata = Program files to the best of my knowledge

At the same place I can also find shortcuts to the saves-,maps-,mods-folders etc. that otherwise are located at:
C:/Users/taotao/My documents/My Games/Beyond the Sword
(which is where I've stored the sp mods)

I tried putting the rtr mod in the same location as my exe-file, but then I couldn't find it when starting the game.

You actually should have a folder (not a shortcut) that is called Mods in that directory. If it is not there, try creating it and put the mod into that newly created directory and see if you can find it then.

Yes, I do have a folder there called Mods (with a bunch of the mods that came with the game). And I did paste in the extracted rtr-mod there. But when I removed the same mod from the other folder the game couldn't find it.

Also after you have it in your "Civilization/BTS/Mods" folder (the one not in your My Documents set of folders), make sure you have also deleted it from the Mods folder in the My Documents section. That could also cause a conflict, I believe.
