So it does look like a case of bad timing. We'll wait until the end of the month anyway, but it looks like we'll put this game on hold until 1 or more other games end.

The mapmaker does not need to be the game admin and the settings for the map will be quite clear so not much thought needs to be put into it. Is there no-one willing to spare some time in a one-off scenario so we can proceed?
I'm considering this, but I don't want to promise anything until I actually find the time to at least make a first draft. Sometimes I make maps without issues, sometimes I end up delaying a game start for a month. I won't promise anything this time until I'm confident I can deliver.

I appreciate that you haven't signed up for the job unless you could commit.

For instance, when you say 'lightly edited Mirror map', do you mean Seven's Mirrorland script, or is there a mapscript called Mirror? What sort of edits do you have in mind? I assume something around strategics - which ones are even important for a Ren era start?

First off, I've never made a map nor plan too, so that may explain the difference in jargon. Perhaps you can better concise what I'm looking for in a map?

I'm going to draw some examples from maps I know. Although aside from the PB33 map the only maps I really know are ones that were played several years back so you may need to do some digging around.

PB33 Map spoilers
I would consider the 33 map to be a 'lightly edited mirror'. The terrain for each player is nearly identical, although not perfectly so. Other examples of such maps are PB2, PB6(for each team), PBEM25 and PBEM47.

To be fair, I can't think of any perfect mirror maps outside of duels, so I admit I worded it poorly. How would you describe those types of maps?

The comparison would be a natural map. Although the starting city terrain may be identical, the surrounding area is not. Maps such as PB1, PB4, PB12 and PBEM38 are examples.

Initially the important strategic resources for Ren era are Horses and Iron, although all the late era resources become important once they are unlocked.

(July 21st, 2016, 08:24)Mardoc Wrote: And if you end up accommodating Commodore's request, what script/settings would you go for then?

Commodore requested a 'natural looking cylinder'. So my interpretation of that is:
  • Cylinder wrap instead of Toroidal
  • Natural map instead of mirror (see inside spoiler for clarification)

Which techs do you start with, what units? Are there any wonders available from T0?

Will update first post for the basics of a Ren era start. Thanks for the idea. smile

the PB33 map wasn't a "lightly edited mirror", it was a fully custom map that went through many large revisions, and Brick put quite a lot of work into it.

do you mean to say "mirror, possibly with some small asymmetry?" note that mirror map setups don't really work very well with continental wrap, especially with an odd number of players, because either players are arranged in a.) one horizontal line, b.) two staggered horizontal lines running along the poles, or c.) the setup's neighbor situation isn't actually mirrored and there's gonna be bitter pickles-in-the-middle beaten up by players with their backs to the edge.

at any rate, if you don't know exactly what kind of map you want then I think it would be a good idea to look through some past games and say which ones have similarish maps to what you have in mind, at very least so that you can give Mardoc some idea of what direction he's shooting in.

I have changed the request for the map down to the basic essentials of what I'm looking for in a map. Essentially, the primary requests I have for the map (aside from a balanced map for everyone, something I assume is the norm) are a natural looking map (thanks to Commodore for asking for this, I probably wouldn't have realized I need to point it out otherwise) and enough water presence so that naval combat is a factor but not enough to dominate the game.

For clarification, the other map settings I originally included were options I would assume to be the only way to create a balanced map for 7 players. Still, better for the mapmaker to decide on this themselves rather then force my opinion onto them while making the map.

I'm interested, if I can get a lurker to tell me when I'm doing something stupid (aka all the time)

With Nicolae's signup, we now have enough signups for a 6 player game (assuming we accommodate Commodore). With that in mind, I would like to ask the other players whether they would like to either:
  1. Wait for 2 more signups for a 7 player game or
  2. Start with the current roster, noting that either a mod or killing off a lurker civ will be necessary to balance the religions (also tell me which option you prefer)
Keep in mind we won't be closing signups until the 30th at the earliest, and we can't proceed with the snakepick without a mapmaker (need starting screenshots). My own preference is to keep the signups open a little while longer, maybe a week or so.

El Grillo is looking to team with someone with more time to dedicate to this game, although both of you indicate wanting a more experienced teammate. Alternatively there are a number of players (REM, TBS etc.) who would be interested in this format but don't have the time to play themselves, perhaps one of them would be willing to join as a dedicated lurker.

I'm not averse to keeping sign-ups open, but I'm perfectly happy going ahead with 6.

Bump.

Still looking for a mapmaker.

Players are still welcome to join in, but signups will close once we get a mapmaker.

Bump, still need a maker of a map.
