Thanks. It's a lot better than losing sight in that eye, that's for sure.
So Miguelito must have been in the middle of transferring units becuase there was a 2nd Axe in the island city this turn, and that C2 Morale Spear was on land. However, it didn't matter, as I won the first battle against the Axe with max fortify bonus at around 30% odds. After that they were all 60+% battles. I did lose one Sword against the Archer, but all things considered it could have gone a lot worse. The city even came with a Granary:
Speaking of worse, he had 3 Spears in the city on the land, so I moved my Immortals to fork it and his cap, although I don't know what's in his cap atm.
He can attack out with the Spears, but that's ok by me, the Spears get injured, lose their fortify bonus, and only kill 1 Imm per attack (and might get unlucky and lose), whereas in my sims they can do a lot better on the defense. I'm hoping that he'll only have a few units in his cap. Maybe a Warrior, that C2 Spear, and another that he whipped. Looking at the power comparison number on the scoreboard, I think that most of his army is visible to me now. I don't think I can take the Hindu holy city, but I will hopefully burn his capital, which will weaken him enough that I can take that Holy city with a sword-based Army instead.

When I sent Miguelito a message informing him that I'd declared war foir turn-split purposes I wished him good luck, I think that might have been a mistake.
I underestimated how weak the Immortals really are, and how many units he'd be willing to attack that stack with. I ended up losing 6. I tried to hit the injured Spears in the holy city, but had something like 3 battles in a row in which my Imms did no damage at all. I got a couple lucky retreats, but all told it's not looking so good.
So, new strategy. Tie down as many units by that holy city as I can, swarm his Trireme with my Galleys and land Swords and Axes outside his cap, possibly even attack from the sea depending on what units he has in it. A lot of his military is Spears, which are not good at taking cities. I should be able to even keep his cap. I think in a prolonged war I will win. I still have a larger army than he does, and more cities now, and my production is much better. I do need to remain careful about Comm though, he has all those HAs and probably wants to use them.

Miguelito won a low odds Axe v Axe battle and as a result managed to kill a bunch of my units at very little cost to himself. After much consideration I decided to offer peace. It's only temporary of course, but I want to spend some time putting my mfg to better use.
Not the best war I've every fought, and in terms of hammers I certainly have come out the loser, but I did come out with a city, so long term I'm ahead. I do have a nice group of CR2 Swords though, so the fun fighting times might not be over. Hmm... Ruff Hi's coast is nearby...

In retrospect I should have withdrawn from the mainland front as soon as I saw he had too many Spears. But oh well, live and learn. It's not as though staying peaceful would have done me any better, surrounded as I am by civs all with more land that I.

He didn't accept peace, which is curious. I don't think it was his cap he whipped this turn, but if it was, and it's a Trireme, my Galleys are in trouble. Probably should have left them in the island city and waited until its borders popped so I can sit on the ocean 2 tiles away from his cap, forcing him to keep a large garrison there. But I think it was his other city that was whipped. I used an unpromoted injured Imm to burn the road from that city to the jungle tile I have camped just inside his borders, so it can only be attacked by 2 Axes at low odds next turn. Hopefully he wont win more low odds battles. I have 3 Swords finishing this turn so the power differential between us will increase, hopefully letting him know that peace isn't a bad idea.

He did build more Triremes, but moved them very conservatively. I think he probably could have moved them in a way that would kill and risk a lot more of my galleys now. But he's very heavily committed to Triremes, which makes sense, he can try and keep my experienced Swords on the island. But I can build Swords at home too, and I might end up being able to brute force my way in again.
I really ought to have left my Galleys on the ocean tile, eventually I would have been able to move onto one 2 tiles from his cap and he'd be forced top keep most of his fleet protecting it, which would have given me the opportunity to move that army back to the mainland to join in that assault.
I've made a lot of mistakes in this war, but that's ok. I don't think I had a chance at all based on the map, and I don't have a lot of experience in early wars, so I'm treating it as a learning experience.

Well, I suppose I deserve it. Moving out without properly checking on my opponents capabilities. I moved a Galley with 2 swords on it to a tile 3 from any of his ships, so that next turn I can join my others on the Ocean tile 2 from his cap. Of course, after I did that I had a closer look and saw he had a 3-move Trireme in position to kill it.
I might get lucky, but I doubt it. What a waste.
But then again, I wasn't thinking as though a single promo is enough to get a 3-move Trireme. I can't remember, was that intended by Krill when he made those changes?
Anyway, I'm on the Horse Archer plan now.

OK, I think I am officially coming down on the side of no random events in future mods, including CtH. Commodore got a bunch of HAs in exchange for building Stables, which help when he builds more HAs. Miguelito got a free Shock promo on his Axes in the middle of being attacked. The events themselves aren't game-breaking, but I don't like advantages born out of randomness.
Anyway, Comm is building Swords, my power just went down a bunch because I lost that Galley filled with swords of my own, and I've been building Stables for my own HAs, which I need to deal with all of those Shock Axes of Miguelito's. So I kinda expect a massive doom stack to appear at any time. Unless I got "lucky" and Comm is going to eat Miguelito after I've spent the last however many turns warring him.
I'm kinda looking forward to dying actually, it'll give me a chance to look at the whole map, see if my complaints are unfounded or not.

Yeah, it's kind of crazy that people will simultaneously want balanced maps and random events. In my experience, the bad feeling of getting a negative event far outweighs the good feeling of a positive event. But maybe that's personal sentiment.
There is no way to peace. Peace is the way.

That's exactly why it's a game option
