I wonder how you pay for your units...

I can't take screenshots as I'm travelling and am playing Civ IV on a Surface Pro, but I make 46 gpt at max tax with 21gpt of unit expenses and 6gpt of inflation

I have an 8 gold and 7 gold trade route with mackoti which is providing the bulk of my commerce. That plus the base palace commerce, tile yields, and Bureaucracy bonus, I could easily be supporting a bigger army than this.

Ah, trade routes. That explains it.

The stat I find amusing when you get to a situation like you're in is to compare your population count to your soldier count. I expect by now those numbers are starting to look a bit odd. Are you paying for an army of mercenary non-citizens yet? lol

Played: Pitboss 18 - Kublai Khan of Germany Somalia | Pitboss 11 - De Gaulle of Byzantium | Pitboss 8 - Churchill of Portugal | PB7 - Mao of Native America | PBEM29 Greens - Mao of Babylon

Looks like Plako got bored and decided not to wait for rifles. Not a bad idea, since he'll be able to get rid of a bunch of old units.

I am not familiar with blockade mechanics, but I assume that the blockade severs all trade routes from your city. If he in addition placed units on your matured cottages, how many units could he possibly have removed by strike?
Fie, fie! you visionary things.

It would have been better to just wait me out for another couple dozen turns and go for Rifling or something if he wanted to do that.

I still have a bit of gold, and I have a very good relationship with Finharry - I imagine I could have asked for bits of gold here and there to keep my army going.

Plako attacked my last city. He wiped out pretty much all the defenders except for a couple of longbows. I was in-game watching the show. I disbanded the hurt longbows trying to speed up my elimination for him by a turn, but apparently I was a fraction too slow and plako attacked with the last unit before I disbanded the last longbow. So I get to hit enter one more time!
