Necroing the thread for two reasons. First, I did a writeup for a solo Red Mage that some people may be interested in reading, particularly in comparison to the same variant that T-Hawk did. And yes, the solo Mime is coming in 2013, getting some special treatment to make the report more interesting than a bunch of pictures of breaking rods and mimicing Elixirs.

Secondly, I'm going to be doing a marathon streaming playthrough of Final Fantasy 5 over the next two days. More information in this video over on my YouTube channel. Thought that some of you might be interested. smile

T-hawk

Nice. Yup, the Red Mage is a unique character in his own right, not just a watered-down version of black/white/fighter techniques. A good chunk of that comes from his wide range of equipment, not unlike your Batman character.

That's where our goals diverged. My Merlin beat both Exdeaths in just two tries once I had the right strategy and gear lined up. He had 100% perfect reliability against the tree form. I prefer to solve randomness within the game mechanics rather than through brute force repetition.

I did not know that Aging status for monsters was bugged on the SNES but fixed on the GBA; that is indeed a very significant difference, and means that my Bone Mail approach (needing Aging on the Almagest part) probably wouldn't work on the SNES.

Man, I'm busy for the weekend, Friday morning is about the only time I can stop in for that, and of course that will be the least interesting part of the game. You just playing a straight nonvariant run or doing something more interesting?

Also, that video looks like it desynchs pretty badly between audio and video, you might want to look into that with that new webcam.

It's not a competition to see who can be more clever, T-Hawk. You'd have to admit that you used save states a lot to do that final battle: first to avoid having to run the Tree form out of MP on every try, and then again to farm up a bunch of Light Staves through manipulation of drop luck. That kind of stuff does matter to me; if you were playing on an actual console, you couldn't do those things, or at least not without a massive investment of time and energy. Your "100% perfect reliability" wasn't without some serious issues of its own. smile

I think I worked out the audio synching with the new webcam, thanks for the advice.

Plus, Sullla couldn't use the Rune Sword which is probably the best weapon for a red mage.

Bored and need a reason to play FFVA again. Noticed the Nudists Challenge on T-Hawk's site. Curious if a solo version is theoretically possible.
