Civ4 AI Survivor: Season Three

An easy solution to the wild card scoring would be to just -1 to all point in the wild card finishers. Give the wild card winner +5 (6 total including the +1 for surviving), 2nd place +2 (3 total), and no points to anyone who survives in the wild card. Or take off and extra 0.5 from the wild card winner/2nd so they still rank below outright winners of the first-round games.

I get this, but under your scoring system, round 1 losers who go on to win the Wildcard game would get more points than the round 1 winners who beat them, which is one of the things the new scoring system was meant to fix.  Under the current system, S1 Zara and S3 Kublai/Pacal aren't penalized anyway:  They get just as many points for gold/silver in the Wildcard game as they would have for a first-round game.  Also, surviving a round 1 game as an also-ran nobody (+1 point) and then surviving the wildcard game as an also-ran nobody (+1 point) would be almost as good as finishing second in the opening round (+3 points) which is exactly what we don't want to see!
You can have Wilcard not give points for surviving due to it's unique nature in the game of being larger than most other games (IE more survivals) and the fact that surviving in the Wildcard doesn't advance you, so it isn't avoiding elimination. Could also do it like Cornflake says, -1 to all WC points.

It would probably be too much work to be practical, but some sort of weighted points for actual game score would weed out people who die after doing nothing versus people who just come in 50 points behind a close to 3-way tie.

Finally caught up and watched the championship game stream, and read through the many excellent comments. Thanks again to Sullla for running season three -- it was very entertaining, with a lot of exciting games and some big surprises. nod Good stuff, and a lot of fun. smile

Just finished reading the whole of Season 3 - thanks Sullla for the fantastic write-ups! Wonderful to have the 2-3 hour videos distilled into written reports with the key points that can be digested in 20 minutes. I know it's a lot of extra work for you, but it's absolutely appreciated! In this world more and more saturated with low-information density videos, it's nice to see some folks still put in the effort to make insightful written summaries. smile

I particularly found the statistical analysis of leader power and the repeat plays at the end super interesting. Can't wait for Season 4 armed with this new data! Next time hopefully I'll be around to participate in the prediction contest.

One thing I'd be really interested to see is a replay of certain games, but with permuted starts. For instance, what happens if Justinian and Cathy are switched in S3 Game 4? This would help answer the question of how much of his 5/6 win record is due to geographic fortune. (Is it simply an easier start to win from, and if so can we quantify that?)

That's an interesting thought. My initial thought is that it would do very little to the results in most cases. Hopefully the maps picked are neutral enough that no one has a winning start position, and the relationships and wars are more important.

The extreme example of that is the finals, where the starts WERE almost all the same, and Mansa was doomed no matter where he started.

Hi Sullla,
Just curious, are you planning on continuing the alt-history scenarios in the near (or distant) future?
Also, would you be interested in potential write-ups sent in?

Hmm, I did do a couple playthroughs of another alternate history. I might be able to finish writing it up when I have some spare time; it's not the highest priority for me right now though. As far as potential writeups, what did you have in mind? All of the games from previous seasons have finished writeups at this point thanks to the efforts of a lot of viewers. smile
