Things seem to have taken a turn for the worse recently... any plans to stabilize you care to share?

The first and most critical immediate step has already been taken by reopening the government. We have about three weeks to continue watching the executive self immolate until the next scheduled crisis begins, at which time things will again take another turn for the worse. In the meantime it seems like the indictments are continuing to drop at an outstanding clip, which is a great long term stabilization plan that, unfortunately, carries significant short term risks to stability (among quite a few other things). I'm not privy to longer range planning than that, I just know what I read and the special counsel's office doesn't leak.

If you were asking about this pitboss game, anything not evidently reflecting the true glorious nature of our great Chairman is fake news.

Played: Pitboss 18 - Kublai Khan of Germany Somalia | Pitboss 11 - De Gaulle of Byzantium | Pitboss 8 - Churchill of Portugal | PB7 - Mao of Native America | PBEM29 Greens - Mao of Babylon

I'm still willing to accept concession from everyone else. But I'm not expecting it.

The short version is that Rusten caught me totally by surprise with galleons. I assumed he'd get there eventually/soonish but I was not expecting him so soon. Very good play by him. This was combined with a temporary force reduction in my southern cities as I routed units to the north of my island to take the northern, shorter route to the contested island to fight DZ. Strategically I knew this was not necessary but I'm bored with this game and want to go wreck DZ. I had just loaded units onto ships when Rusten razed our third city, former Moai site. I had a modest stack of triremes and galleys set to turn the tide vs. DZ. I've been holed up in two cities over there and have built up a good stack from next to nothing, so the situation over there is stabilized now. Whatever he's trickling in has been stalled off by my two unsupported cities. And for now, PRO longbows are more than DZ can deal with. I've now added a couple of cats and xbows and will be able to wipe his stack soon if he misplays. The plan was to have the galley reinforcements come in behind his stack and flank his coastal cities. He also has 3 move naval units due to CHM/wonderwhoring and building his entire game around unit promos (civics: Vassalage and Theocracy) but I would have been able to flank him anyway. But those units have had their expedition cancelled and we'll now turtle up on the home island. Rusten will reduce our eastern islands at his leisure. I'll just be stuffing cities with longbows to make it more expensive but he'll have them eventually, and probably soon. Well, very soon if my LBs don't defend better than on the last city taken. I lost 7% and 33% battles consecutively, PRO longbows w/ promo defending vs gall warriors (celt axes), as well as the 2% fight Rusten took to scratch top defender withdrew. Unbelievable. This game is awesome.

I'm so far from Astro that I really can't do much to counter Rusten aside from making continental invasion impossible. I have few other advantages. My empire civ is, for now, 50 tiles wide. This is impossible to keep intact but it's what we had to do to find land to expand into. The inability to expand reasonably is our downfall in this game. We were doing just fine in the early game until we had to go so far afield to find places for new cities. The only thing I'm really looking forward to is the end so I can see the rest of the map and inform my complaining further.

Last turn Rusten offered peace and positioned (likely empty) galleons to try to threaten a few western cities on the home island. I declined his offers (both were the same blank peace offer). I had a stack in position to (maybe: it was an iffy proposition) recapture my southeastern city but he has reinforced and I'm tired of the turn split so he can have it until I come back with knights later on. For now I'm tying up his units that could more profitably be sitting in galleons en route to another crazy rng city capture. Also, I'm not trying to manage a turn split while travelling for work, fuck that. There's booze to drink on someone else's dime.

This is pretty much representative of the combat rolls in this war:

And this feels like the game writ small:

The map is actively fighting against me at all times. I have circumnav so I outran both boats, let someone else deal with them, but I'll have to deal with them if/when I return to that area to capture the barb city and renew the expansion of my fragile empire at ever-more-laughable distances from home base.

I will admit to a healthy dose of Schadenfreude when Gavagai captured DZ's capital. I have been far from impressed by DZ's play and I really hated for him to "win" our little war. He razed a city and has 2/3 of our continent. If he can keep it. He got very luck that Rusten attacked and diverted the pain he would otherwise have received. I'll come back at him with knights soon.

ETA on knights?
"Superdeath seems to have acquired a rep for aggression somehow. [Image: noidea.gif] In this game that's going to help us because he's going to go to the negotiating table with twitchy eyes and slightly too wide a grin and terrify the neighbors into favorable border agreements, one-sided tech deals and staggered NAPs."
