That is a pretty cool screenshot:

Airstrip One Palace Court - No Players!

I think certain posters are following the rule "If you can't saying anything nice say nothing." about Munro's victory...
Munro's victory is not very different from other ones. If you don't drop your core in a tech-trading game you will be a threat to win the game. Someone in a better postion will want allies to help them. You can ally with them and get feed tech.
I have nothing but applause for Munro's victory. I was waiting for the players themselves to do some retrospective AAR-type stuff, letting them speak first before commenting, but that doesn't appear to be forthcoming yet. Maybe tomorrow I'll have time to write up some of my thoughts on this game.
Since this thread is at least getting a bit of traffic...

I guess the main reason that I haven't posted anything is that the game still feels kind of "raw" / painful to me. I still feel awful about losing a game that I feel like I "should have" won, or maybe better said that I came so CLOSE to winning (twice).
Honestly the day that Munro razed my capital was one of the worst RL days for me in a long time. It really felt like a literal stomach punch. It definitely carried over into the real world. And it didn't help matters that I felt so silly about taking a "game" so seriously and letting it affect me - actually that just made it worse. I take nothing from Munro's win - he definitely outplayed me at the end - I was not even considering that I could be 1-moved there. I was kind of on autopilot those last few turns because I didn't even think about it. Obviously Munro's experience in MP games was a great boon there - compare my capital longbow defense to his "commando-protecting" defense, posted upthread. I know that I've got a lot of things to remember if I'm ever in this situation again! At least for me, I felt like I played the game well up until the last little bit. I felt the key to my success was continually working the diplomatic channels, and always talking to people, even those on opposing sides. I do realize that other folks may have felt that was actually a detriment, and obviously it didn't help me avoid the nuclear rain that came my way. But I was glad that I was able to persevere and put myself into a winning position even after that, and hope that it can serve as an example of the "RB way" to those who may feel that their position is hopeless in future games. Anyway GG and thanks to everyone. I also emailed kalin, ruff, ZPV, shadyforce, mh / kodii and dsplaisted to let them know that the game was over in case they hadn't heard. regoarrarr Wrote:It really felt like a literal stomach punch. Happens to me as well, so don't worry, you're not a freak! That was a pretty good description of what happens actually. Saying to yourself: "It's only a game!" for a hundred times doesn't seem to help, does it? MJW (ya that one) Wrote:I think certain posters are following the rule "If you can't saying anything nice say nothing." about Munro's victory...That's certainly not the case, not with me anyway. I've been so busy lately (which is why I haven't had a chance to catch up on the game, and I may never have that chance, not in the near future anyway. I am very familiar with Rego's hard work during the game because we were constantly in contact and our precarious border meant our fates were intertwined. Munro, in contrast, I had very little contact with. And the ascendency of the Roman empire seems to have begun not too long before I left. So because I don't really know what happened in the turns after I left, I can't comment too greatly. All I can say is that I never gave the Roman empire much of a chance to win this game, for me Inca, Mali, India and HRE have always been the main players. So to stay below the radar, slowly grind your way back into contention and eventually race ahead of those superpowers and nip Rego at the post is an impressive achievement. So huge congrats to Munro for a fantastic victory. Well done mate. Also Rego, I'm sorry about how the game ended, that must suck. But stop focusing on the nagatives. You are not perfect and mistakes are going to happen. Consider yourself extremely unlucky that this particular mistake happened to get punished and in a particularly harsh way. You played an awesome game from start to end, I mean really so much effort and planning and skill. shadyforce Wrote:Also Rego, I'm sorry about how the game ended, that must suck. I have to admit that I lied so I would be able to guilt-trip people into posting here. I still stand by "there is not much to say" about Munro's win.
I have only a limited amount to say about this game. Not because I have nothing nice to say, but because I wasn't involved in the game for very long.
I apologize for failing to post much in my teams thread after I took over. At first, I had a lot to say, but posting the info about the plans for all those cities was a bit daunting. I feel I failed in this regard and my posting skills have not reached the regoarrarr-level yet (and in truth the rest of us may never reach that level ), but I will try to improve my posting skills in the next game. I can say that I enjoyed playing the game and talking to the players. I am a new player to Pitbosses, but I am hooked. I have a hard time playing Single Player these days. I have taken over several other civs in games in which some of the RBPB1 players are playing (or "were" playing; Sorry Dreylin). I look forward to playing a civ from the beginning in one of these games sometimes. I took over for Twinkletoes, who was himself a replacement player, and I admit I didn't know quite what to do with my huge empire. I had almost no military, with many cities empty and unhappy because of it. I think the players would have tried a diplomatic victory with people voting for Broker, had I not entered into the game. Twinkletoes told me he was thinking about voting to end the game when I took over. I talked with Broker about this, but I didn't want the game to end with a vote. I think I had the population to get the vote won for someone, but I told them I'd only vote to end the game if everyone was tired of playing. To me everyone should want to win, and voting for someone else to win a Diplomatic or Religious victory is not a winning strategy (unless of course you know that the vote will fail and you want to gain + diplo points with the person you voted for). My civ played a strange role in world politics. We had the most land and the highest score for the whole time I was playing. We maintained good relations with both our allies and enemies. I admit I was convinced that Broker was going to pull of a culture victory before we got to space, and I thought my allies were bigger threats to winning than my enemies. I tried to build factories in my cities and go for a Space Victory, since attacking some one didn't fit with our neutrality and I was a bit self-conscious about turning the game upside down as a replacement player. I talked about trying to help Alex fight off Munro so he wouldn't die and to keep Munro busy. I also hoped very much that rego would get enough nukes before the ban to be able to strike back at Broker to slow his culture push. But then we signed the nuclear ban and limited their use, so I decided to try to outrace them with a Space Race. I started building the Apollo and the Space Elevator. I had a Great Engineer, and I planned to rush the Apollo, but realized that it was a Project not a wonder and I couldn't use it to rush anything. I totally forgot I could rush the SE, or I would have gotten it. Instead I got some useless gold. That was a mistake. I still think I would have been late to lift off, but it would have been closer. I had very few forests left to chop, but every city that wasn't building a part built workers and I must have had 70+ workers at the end there, workshopping everything and chopping the few forests that were left into spaceship parts. I was super impressed how quickly rego was able to build his spaceship parts. Seems like they all came in 1 turn. Even after he'd recently been nuked all to hell. Munro said he just wanted to battle, so I didn't think he was trying to win, just to enjoy himself with some modern warfare. I knew his empire was hammer heavy so he produced his Space Ship pretty fast when he started going for it. When he said he meant to send out his ship the turn before he actually did, its sounded like he was not just sending it out for the fun of it, so I suspected he might try to do something with his military. My hat is off to him. He was not so much trying to win at first and was underestimated. But when he decided to try to win, he did just that. What more can you ask from a player? Several players earned my respect in just the short time I played this game. I hope to play many more games with Realms Beyond players, and hopefully I will be able to play in the next RB Pitboss game from the beginning. CFC is a like a necessity for all Civ players, but RB feels more like home. Now if I can get myself to finish an Adventure before the deadline, I can be more of a contributing member. When new Pitbosses start will they just be announced in the general Civ forum? Or will there just be a new subforum called RBPB4? |
