Diplomacy Master Thread- Helping Your Opponents Beat Themselves

My personal belief is that we're likely to have a lot of enemies moving forward and not a lot of friends. Having a secure border to the east with WPC could be very valuable, even if they are pretty weak themselves. I actually think that at least one team is likely to declare war on us before T200, whether that's CFC or Apolyton or someone else, so any additional security is a plus in my book. I would accept WPC's offer and pass along that screenshot (after cropping/editing).

And if the worst should come to pass, Turn 200 isn't THAT far away...

I agree. I think that an NAP has a much larger chance to be useful than not.
Merovech's Mapmaking Guidelines:
0. Player Requests: The player's requests take precedence, even if they contradict the following guidelines.

1. Balance: The map must be balanced, both in regards to land quality and availability and in regards to special civilization features. A map may be wonderfully unique and surprising, but, if it is unbalanced, the game will suffer and the player's enjoyment will not be as high as it could be.

2. Identity and Enjoyment: The map should be interesting to play at all levels, from city placement and management to the border-created interactions between civilizations, and should include varied terrain. Flavor should enhance the inherent pleasure resulting from the underlying tile arrangements. The map should not be exceedingly lush, but it is better to err on the lush side than on the poor side when placing terrain.

3. Feel (Avoiding Gimmicks): The map should not be overwhelmed or dominated by the mapmaker's flavor. Embellishment of the map through the use of special improvements, barbarian units, and abnormal terrain can enhance the identity and enjoyment of the map, but should take a backseat to the more normal aspects of the map. The game should usually not revolve around the flavor, but merely be accented by it.

4. Realism: Where possible, the terrain of the map should be realistic. Jungles on desert tiles, or even next to desert tiles, should therefore have a very specific reason for existing. Rivers should run downhill or across level ground into bodies of water. Irrigated terrain should have a higher grassland to plains ratio than dry terrain. Mountain chains should cast rain shadows. Islands, mountains, and peninsulas should follow logical plate tectonics.

I was copacetic until this:

As you might have noticed, the Spaniards have finally agreed to peace and we were able to connect our marble! We would like to gift it to you now as per our agreement. We currently don't need it but we would like to start on our own Epics in about ten turns. We have offered it in game so please ask your turnplayer to accept it.
Thanks,

Caledorn / Team CFC

It was needlessly smug for my taste.

Alright, so I'm pretty much caught up with the game so far, so I hope nobody minds me giving my opinion on this subject of the NAP with WPC.

The way I see it, forging closer ties with WPC is very much in our interest. So far, due to a low priority being placed on scouting, and thus first making contact with teams while being in a clear first place, team RB has no close allies or friends. While thanks to our excellent diplo team, we also have no enemies, I still do not see the current geo-political situation as favorable for RB. There are many benefits to having a close relationship with WPC:

-Gold loans
-Resource gifts
-Buffer zone/secure border(i.e. Dantski in PB2)
-Potential early warning of a dog pile

But more importantly, the reaction to an attack on WPC would be disastrous. A lot of the weaker teams at this point must no that they have no chance of winning. Because of this, they are much less predictable. If those civs see the big strong RB team attacking former military allies, they are much more likely to ally with CFC or CivFr in a dogpile. This would probably happen with the German team, but thankfully everybody is incredibly annoyed with that team because of their refusal to end turns.

This is not to say that we should never attack WPC, I would just argue that we should wait until we have the necessary resources to fully survive a situation where all other civs in the game pooling their resources to take us down.

I agree with Sullla, WPC is the most friendly of the other civs in the game and its not beyond the realms of possibility that they will help us in future wars (assuming the German one goes well).

We certainly should send them a polite "its nothing personal" e-mail when we declare war. Surely Germans will understand a bit of Realpolitik smile.

I think we should send them both the pic and kjn s post, and accept NAP overtures.
The bigger worry with a NAP in my view is that CFC uses it to gorge on both WPC and Spanish, but that's not something we can mention now.

Hey, thanks for the message. Our preparations are definitely well under way - perhaps you've seen our power graph rising a bit lately wink. We're definitely looking forward to the Incan conquest!

I'll get back to you on the NAP issue once we've had a chance to discuss it as a team, but I wanted to get this quick reply to you given the circumstances. To aid in your planning, we seem to have found the main Incan stack here:

Hopefully that helps you as you prepare. We will definitely be ready to declare war and move into Incan territory on T150. Will you guys be ready for that as well? I'll send you another email in the next few days with more details of course, as well as a response on the NAP extension offer. smile

Thanks,
scooter - Team RB

Went ahead and sent this. I'm also in favor of agreeing to the T200 extension. Seems like most people are too, so I'll send a confirmation tomorrow if nobody makes a case against it before then.

How about:
