League of Legends General Discussion Thread

There is a basic tutorial map to teach the basic mechanics of LoL. Like basic hero movement, the concept of buying items, leveling up, killing minions, towers, etc.

As for the real meat, understanding the map, knowing good item builds, which heroes will mess you up and in what way, most can be picked up by playing against bots, but ideally grab a partner and play.

OptimusTom is also a good resource.

Sullla has nice videos explaining specific champions and showing them throughout a game.

Riot Games provides decent info on how to play champion on their Champion Spotlight, although understanding masteries and runes will take a bit. But don't worry. Starting at level 1 they are happily locked away until you grasp the basics.

Thanks all. I found the official new user guide (http://na.leagueoflegends.com/learn/new_...rid=footer) and I'm downloading the game now, so maybe I'll mess around with the tutorial. And thanks for the offers GES and Sullla - may take you guys up on that sometime.

BTW, don't buy runes until level 20. By then you should have enough IP to buy a ton of tier 3 runes. Most cost-effective.

Actually you should buy Tier 1 runes from levels 1-19 which are a miniscule fraction of the cost but 60% of the effectiveness. Skip Tier 2 entirely.

The whole response to this by MLG and the outrage of the online community to that punishment is amusing to me, because of how seriously this kind of stuff is taken in SC2. There were two players in Korea- Coca and another guy I'm forgetting who were playing in a very minor weekly online only tournament where Coca decided to be nice and let the other guy win because he'd been having a tough time recently or something. Both players were banned not just from that small tournament but also the unrelated GSL tournament (think IPL + MLG put together x20 status), and even their own teams for several months right at the peak of their career. MLG's punishment is a joke, and in my opinion should be far more serious (ie ban the players from MLG for the rest of the year and maybe wipe their season 2 circuit points) because they're setting a precedent, and any other team that consider this needs to know the consequences of them trying it, and the sponsers need to know the teams will take their responsibility seriously, and not just give the players a slap on the wrist like they're doing here.

Eh, I felt the Teir 1 runes being marginal until you could get a decent sized set.

But that's just my opinion.

Remember you don't have talent points at that point either. Just buying some AD runes would probably help with last hitting, especially if you're totally not used it.

Somewhere about 200 pages back in this thread I wrote out the analysis of the runes and it is clear. Tier 1 runes are by far THE MOST COST EFFECTIVE in the game, but stop buy them at level 20.

Bottom line

Levels 1-19 buy tier 1
Levels 20+ buy tier 3 phasing out your tier 1

NEVER buy tier 2

If you speed to level 30 in a month or two, you don't really need to buy tier 1 runes. You will literally never touch them after hitting 30. 1-30 is 350-400 normal games.
