Yeah, turns out that post was either outdated or total bogus. On capturing a city the game checks if the city is a capital and if true it resets the victory progress for the player. Interestingly it resets the victory countdown for all victory types, but since space victory is the only one on a real timer it only happens for that victory type.

@Palace/Capital: The linked post is for CivRev, but not Civ4.

Piccadilly launched the spaceship and Ichabod joined the dogpile against Piccadilly. Interesting times.
Back on my side, Miguelito "joined" the war effort against Amicalola. I say "joined" because Amicalola declared war against Miguelito. That must have hurt already as I know they had a lot of trade going. I took that opportunity to trade even more metal resources with Miguelito. I stay with you until the end buddy.
Still no major combat although I see tanks on the astro island. Most dangerous is a smaller naval stack as seen in the screenshot. Fireburg is at risk, but I'm building a fort in order to ferry more units that way or recapture Fireburg. Also also the air should be fairly covered so far in Lazteuqs homeland with 4 fighters of mine so far deployed there and more to come.

Question for my lovely lurkers. I don't see a counter for piccadillies space race. Will I be at least informed if he fails?
Fireburg saw no landing. Instead Amicalola went for the astro island. I smashed my catapults into his stack. I did count my infantries in the city but it must be around 10-15. Hopefully they take some units with them thanks to city defender promotion and hill, but my hopes are low since Amicalola also has bomber support there. I hope Amicalola goes directly into the western see next with his loaded transports. There I can hit him with my destroyers from Fireburg and Miguelito can also join in. Miguelito moved a lot of ships into the Ramkland-GKCland area. And should be able to prevent any landings on my southern islands. I also saw transports of him so he will take back those former Lazteuq islands.
Meanwhile the defense in Lazteuq's homeland is holding. Amicalola managed to raze another coastal city. I saw only one damaged marine there which I killed. First blood for me in that area. As you can see my fighters also started doing their work there. This area should get more difficult for Amicalola.
Up in GKCland Miguelito has already a tight control of the defense although Amicalola still manages to raze some cities. But as we all know Miguelito has MechInf which can beat Amicalola any day. As long as Miguelito is with us on the defense of our continent I see no way Amicalola can take it and I think he will stay with us as that's the best way to defend this side of his for his eventual space race. And Miguelito does not have to fear a backstab from me or Lazteuq. Lazteuq will be to weak for that after this invasion and I already stated I will be with him. After Piccadilly Miguelito is my best ticket for survival.

Does the victory advisor screen have a countdown? Or a launch status on his spaceship?

Shocking international news. Amicalola signed an actual peace treaty with Piccadilly. That surely should give Piccadilly the win, right? And in continuing shocking news, Miguelito signed a cease fire with Amicalola. At first I thought it's also a peace treaty, but apparently it's only a cease fire. So Miguelito hopefully returns in helping us against Amicalola. And of course as the last shocking news, Miguelito finished Manhatten project, so expect some fireworks (hopefully) on the other side.
That war with Amicalola was certainly a blow to Miguelito's war effort. Miguelito also send a iron, fish for fish which I happily returned. That's why I think Miguelito will still support us.
I lost the astro island as expected and discovered a destroyer around 6 tiles south of Fireburg, which I destroyed. After that I started exploring towards the astroy island to discover Amicalola's fleet already on the move again. He had 4 destroyers, 2 frigates and a bunch of transporters. I destroyed 3 destroyers and wounded the 4th. I doubt this will prevent a landing on Fireburg, I still don't have enough destroyers to destroy all transports. I also swapped into slavery this turn to finish two destroyers on this front this turn. Hopefully I can prevent the loss of Fireburg or at least trap his units on the island. Maybe he will also land on the Lazteuq home land.
In addition one can see that Amicalola so far had no real opposition on the sea as all of his ships are promoted with Navigation. This of course makes it easier to overtake his ships with my combat promoted ones. It also was helpful that he stopped on an ocean tile and therefore does not get the +10% defense from coast. By the way ignore the sign it is old.

Unfortunately the victory screen says nothing about the countdown.
It's amazing how little has happened between me and Amicalola in this war. Only some skirmishes on the sea and some interception by my fighters. Oh and the one marine. Same goes for this turn. I couldn't find his transporters anyway, so no landing this turn? Amicalola destroyed my destroyers and that way the last battles were an even exchange more or less. Unfortunately there was no way to hit him this turn as he added a battleship into the mix and I did not have the force to overcome that unit for now.
For now it looks like this war turns into a big stalemate as Amicalola couldn't manage to get a solid hold on the mainland. I count that as a win for us.
Oh and in a small late victory against Lazteuq. I finally took one tile by culture near Esther City. Finally a way to build a farm there and get some food to that poor city. You can see the worker on the top of the first screenshot
