Quote:Hey guys,

I apologize for not being around much today. I wasn't trying to be TJ!!! smile

But after thinking things over, I think that I will have to decline a NAP extension as currently offered.

I do know that oftentimes in RB, a non-renewal of a NAP is interpreted as almost a pre-declaration of war. I think that's one of the things that you don't like about NAPs. I know that it's one of the things that *I* don't like about them. But having said that, I don't think my / our course is set. You guys of course will do what you gotta do. I know that I have spent the past few turns at least trying to make sure that I wasn't going to be hit with "Diplomacy by Other Means, part 2" :-) I'd say that I've been much more worried that YOU are going to attack ME (again), than the other way around.

Like you said, while restoring some Yourmomian city names to some of your Troll hangouts would be fun, you are correct in saying that I'm much more interested in winning. And like yourselves, I have not been unaware of Capt. Viking "Parkinizing" the last 10 techs or so, including some pretty heavy hitters. So I'm open for further discussions, but wanted to at least give you this in case you were waiting on hearing from me before passing the save. I am heading home from work now but will be around later this evening (in about 3hrs time) if you want to discuss other alternatives.

I'm tempted to stop ded-lurking you to see if T-Hawk made a drunken post in Gaspar's thread.

My bet is T-hawk making a visibility clarification

Been awhile. I'm not sure why I feel less like updating in this game than in previous games. A few turns, as non-dedicated lurkers will undoubtedly know, Pindicator declared on Gaspadore (much at my urging), razing a city that was very perilous to many of my cities (including most importantly my Moai town of So Skinny)

Gaspadore has been trying to renew our NAP. I find that somewhat ironic, given his earlier hatred of them. At one point he sent this

Quote:Well, we understand about business, it happens. If you look at your tech screens, as I'm sure you're prone to do, you'll see we've just picked up "bloody expensive to invade us", and are now researching "attacking us would be sticking it into the meatgrinder". If you don't want your hands tied with an excessively long NAP, would you be interested in a rolling 5-turn NAP? Unless we can get some sort of guarantee of your peaceful intentions, we'll be forced to start building up defenses all along the western front

The techs that he was referring to were Nationalism and Rifling.

I by no means think that he will be a pushover, but I think that my air power is going to be pretty important. I mean I saw firsthand in PBEM17 how important airships were, and that was where the attackers were at a tech DISADVANTAGE (East Indiamen to Frigates). Gaspadore got Chemistry this turn, but I already have 19 Frigates (many of which have Drydock-enabled promos)

After I turned down the NAP extension, he sent a note

Quote:Fair enough. So we're on the same page, that was up to and including Turn 147, right? wink

I didn't respond, but before this past turn (T147) he caught me on IM to clarify this, and I said that I considered our NAP to be fulfilled, and gave him "permission" to attack me this turn.

He did.

I did try to protect my lands and I was hopeful that I would not lose any cities. There was one that was potentially in danger, if he had units on some of his galleys / galleons. I guess he did not.

So, the first order of business is removing his navy.

Air strike on a caravel, which a galleon then took out @ 87% odds, and then a frigate got its 5th XP taking out a galley (blue circle)

[Image: Civ4ScreenShot0137.JPG]

Ooh and reviewing the average power numbers have those 2 kills losing 25K in power, so that means the galley was loaded! thumbsup 20K so I bet it was a rifle and an axe which I think I've seen in that area before.

Next up was the galley on the red circle, which my frigate kille flawlessly.

I've got a few more things going on in that "northern" theater, but let's turn our attention to the south

[Image: Civ4ScreenShot0138.JPG]

He's put his ships on the red circles. I'm not sure what his plan was - if he was just exploring defenses, or just killing some of my galley riffraff and such. Or maybe he just wanted to start with as big of a bang as he could? My city of "End of the line" was the one that was potentially in danger this turn. It only had 1 drafted rifle, and there could have been units on his galleon (NE circle). There's also a galley just to the south of this picture in range of EotL.

In any case, I am not interested in him having ships over here. Actually, I'm not interested in him having ships at all devil

Doing a bit of scouting to the east reveals another galleon and 3 galleys but they're all a) out of range of any of my ships for this turn and b) out of range of most of my cities (one galleon can get to the tile NE of Snow Blower, so I'll have to make sure to park a frigate or two on that tile just in case it's loaded. I actually think that most of his ships are not loaded, at least not for offensive purposes. But better safe than sorry. And I do know he's got those Nav 1 galleys (maybe upgraded to galleons) probably still full of those CR2 Amphibious Berserkers (or maybe upgraded to Rifles yikes)

* Frigate kills Galleon. It had 99% odds to do it, but I probably still should have hit it with an airship, because now even though it won, it's at 2.0/8 HP and probably going to die on defense.
* Frigate kills Caravel
* Galleon kills Caravel
* Frigate kills Caravel

There's still one caravel left, but he'll die next turn.

Next let's take a shot at Frostmane Hold. This is a pretty junky city, but hey one thing it is useful for is another forward base for airships.

[Image: Civ4ScreenShot0139.JPG]

Gaspadore probably figured (and I can't really argue with him) that it wasn't worth putting a whole lot into defending it. So it's empty (red circle)

Sure - I'll take it! lol

[Image: Civ4ScreenShot0139.JPG]

Now if I didn't have a) total control of the skies, and thus full knowledge of what's out there, which lets me know b) that I have naval control of the area, I probably wouldn't bother. But I know that even in the fog, there's only 1 galley that is in range, even considering that some of his galleons are 6-movers. (This is where I write this down as "famous last words" lol). So I should be able to hold it this turn.

Your Galleons were empty I presume?

Leaving a forest in the first ring of your city? nono

He did move out his Numidian Cavalry, I assume to try and prevent me from landing on his wheat or coal unopposed and keeping him from working those tiles.

It's only 2 rifles, 8 janissaries and 2 longbows landing on that forest. He's got 2 rifles and 1 musket inside. He may add another rifle next turn via the whip, but he can't add anything from the sea (I sank all his ships in the area), and my calculations were showing even a janissary got 25% odds against an 80 HP rifle (after I take away defenses with the frigates and bomb it with the airship)

So we'll check the scene next turn. After that, I adjusted builds, trying to fit in some infra builds also, and ended turn.
