RBP7 [SPOILERS] - The Chronicles of Nyania

Quite -- I am only a noob to all this but I do think a lot of the more experienced players need to take a step back. PB4 should be isolated game yet too much emotion from that has been imported to this. Daft really, it isn just a game.

So I sent out a few units to harrass Mongolia, and noticed there were only 2 Archers guarding the area - with a Worker under one.

I figured if Azz engaged, it'd be a likely 2:1 kill ratio for us, or at worst a 1:1. If we engaged, I was considering throwing the Chariots to kill the Archer and kill his Worker on the hill. If we got lucky with the first Chariot, we could even keep the Worker.

When I moved 1SW before attacking the hill though, I saw something else. You're not going to believe it... it's another CIV101 moment. yikes

Um... yeah. Needless to say, the undefended (?!?!) Settler died. (How many different players are going to leave critical things completely undefended in this game? I believe so far it's been at least three and counting... duh )

After taking the Settler, the Chariot found himself surrounded by 3 Archers - so I deleted the Worker to prevent any recouping of losses. Negative 100 hammers to Mongolia... again.

...Or not quite. One slightly bitter aftertaste was that in his counterattack, Azz lucked out in killing that Chariot at 26.7% odds... which would have given his lucky Archer a disgusting 5 XP. Oh well, at least he already had a Combat promotion on that Archer, so it should have only gained one promotion and won't be able to go CG2. Still, sucks a bit.

In brighter news, we were fortunate enough to gain some XP of our own in a few lucky battles. I went in for the 50/50 with Azz's Chariot because we couldn't really lose either way: it'd be a 1 for 1 or it'd be a 1 for 0... free XP for us regardless.

As it turned out, our first Chariot retreated, but did enough damage for the second one to finish it off. So we got one Chariot from 4 -> 5 XP, and the other from 9 -> 11 XP. Two new promotions... not bad for a day's work.

So yeah, an eventful turn. A net loss of 130 hammers for Mongolia, and 30 hammers for Nyania. And another lesson - perhaps - learned.

Good work Azza...

A comparatively quiet turn this time around. Nothing of any great significance happened.

Most of our 6 Workers are busy chopping, with the exception of the one hooking up the Pigs at Aybabtu. Another Worker will be completed in Pwnage shortly, and I'm considering an 8th in the capital before too long. Metal units underway in several cities in the meantime.

A wandering barb Warrior netted us another 2 free XP.

Incidentally, it might be about time to start thinking about getting back to expansion. Somewhere around that area where we just killed the barbarian actually seems pretty decent for a new city, aside from the obvious possibility of the west if we can keep pushing back Mongolia. Corn and Furs... that'd raise our happy cap while being able to pay for itself and eventually contribute to the empire.

I agree on expansion and fur would be nice.

So, where exactly should we locate this Fur city when we found it? I've outlined three possible places in the image below.

The northern spot nets a hill for defence, though suffers from more tundra than the other spots. It would make the largest number of additional tiles visible via culture to decrease barb spawn rates.

The two southern spots could both potentially share the Cow with Pwnage if required. The left one grabs the largest amount of decent terrain, albeit with a fair bit of overlap and situated on a flatland tile. The right one grabs a hill tile for defence and has slightly poorer terrain available, though it does have the advantage of immediately netting the Furs (as opposed to 3+ turns after founding).

Could also possibly found 1E of the Corn (not currently marked), or a couple of other less appealing places. 1S of the Corn would allow both the Wheat and Cow to be shared and a Wine grabbed for later, but would require an extra ~12 or more turns to hook up the Furs (Stele for border expansion).

Thoughts? I think I'm leaning towards the spot 1SE of the Corn, though I'm not completely set on it.

Tough one. I say 1 SE of the corn as well. Leaves room to work both furs.

Working the (relatively) lush riverside will be more beneficial than working the Furs, especially the one with no food. Though settling 1S of the Corn and delaying 12+ turns on hooking up the Fur by not having it in the immediate BFC isn't particularly appealing either. So yeah, 1SE of the Corn seems like the best compromise right now.

I'm considering chopping out a Granary in Aybabtu before heading back to metal units. Thoughts? Going to be more beneficial to build it sooner rather than later, and it seems there's no immediate need for more troops to defend our position against Mongolia. Plus, getting the Granary now would allow us to make use of the delicious Corn+Pig for some whipping later. The downside is that it'll slow down any potential offensive against Mongolia in the short term.

Maybe settling On the fur isn't such a bad idea after all...

Well it actually won't cost us much (or any) time if we're organized and prebuild a road to the Furs. Then the Furs can be connected just 1-2 turns after the city being founded - or even on the same turn if enough Workers are brought over (possibly not worth it).
