[PB79] MirOh No, what am I doing?

Btw, same reasoning as to phil is applicable to Native America, you only pic it if you want to do something with the poles. But here at least there is a synergy of a sort with CHA.

I'm hoping to be nowhere near Rickety Cricket. That Shaka + Praetorian pick is so scary. It might not be the top-tier play you're used to seeing, but to me it signals that he wants to win 1 war.

Scout safety is going to be more difficult here than I'm used to. I'm used to always having 2 str Warriors or +100% vs animals. Do I still get the +1 free win vs barb on this mod? Not even sure if Monarch difficulty gets that in original BtS, just trying to think of how much I can scout and will definitely be conservative with him.

I like the meme game.

Don't get me wrong trying to win one early war and then building a strong economy after is a viable strat (if still not the most successful historically). Its just not a strat I would choose for a newer to multiplayer player.

Just a mod clarification. You still get the normal 100% vs animals and then an extra 100% with hunting. Unsure about the free barb win.

There shouldn't be free wins on Monarch. You get a 20% bonus vs animals.

Ohh I thought it meant the +100% was moved to Hunting and Scouts were super vulnerable without Hunting. Ok, nice!

And thanks, civac!

I have a few more questions before the game starts:

  1. Do alternate win conditions ever come up, or are games always decided by conquest/domination?
  2. What is the normal pace for a PB game?
  3. I noticed the etiquette thread mentions: “Try to log in once per turn.” Do we get notifications for when the next turn begins? If I want to log in again to post screenshots here or take note of an opponent’s land after I only had time to focus on playing my turn earlier, is it OK to log back in considering that my turn is “done”?

Thanks!

1) almost never. It actually usually decided by tech actually although that usually translates into more territory but not always by time of concession. ( Edit: you can turn tech into land or land into tech, but either way tech is usually the concession point)
2) At least 1 turn per day, but with 5 people and simultaneous it just depends on the players. I would expect 2-3 turns a day early at least unless 2 people have small windows not near each other.
3). You can sign up for email notifications on pbspy either on turn roll or after a player plays. If you are at war don't log into the half of turn that isn't yours. If its a complicated war turn its ok to break it up, but don't make it a habit if it can be avoided. If you aren't and you do once in a while its fine, but wouldn't recommend too much both for game play and also just real life time. I'll note a very common trap for civ4 multiplayer is to get really drawn into the game and honestly it is surprising how emotional it can be especially when you are new.

1) The most common victory is out-of-game concession, usually due to dominant land and/or tech. Spaceship is one of the ways of threatening to actually win while not being dominant, and historically there have been a few sneaky culture wins.
2) In the early stages it can easily be 3-4 turns a day, but it usually slows down to slightly more than 1 turn. If the game lasts into industrial era warfare, it may slow down even further. (PB66 was down to one turn a week at the very end)
3) If someone wants to declare war on you, it can be very hard to do if you log in just as the turn rolls and then wait 16 hours to play.

Spaceship and culture victories can happen on very large maps. At some point it is simply not feasible to defeat a 60+ city empire before they complete their victory condition.

In a game of this size spaceship/culture is nearly but not completely impossible. For example, MrCairo won PB43 with a culture attempt on a medium size map.

Hi. Its getting kind of close to your T25 settler, can we see what you have seen and what you are thinking about for second city / future micro if you have it figured out?

Next turn I'll find Copper, but here's what our land looks like. EDIT: Next turn started, but I already stitched the land into 1 pic, so I just added brown circles on the 3 Copper tiles.

That's a great point I'm keeping in mind!

Scout's Journey:
Went west, then started a counterclockwise arc to our north east.
Met a friendly bear that could have attacked us (flat forest), so our Scout came back through our territory to scout NE and met coldrain (NA Lincoln).
Happy to see him! Means ricketyclik's Shaka+Rome is less likely to be nearby.

I misspoke earlier with the T25 Settler statement; I am getting a T25 Settler, but it's from 2-pop w/o Warrior, not 3-pop w/ Warrior.
3-pop + Warrior would yield a T27 Settler, still good, but our great nation will be built on gamblers and ramblers. Now allow me to ramble.

When I skimmed through the previous green PB (PB74?), I saw greenline named his cities after his favorite books. Love that! I haven't named my cities in over a decade. I hope other players have a theme to their city names, I'll be judging them hard for using default names.
I'm going to name my cities after some of my favorite board games, so our capital is named "Gloomhaven"! If unfamiliar, imagine it as a D&D campaign with a card system for actions and fatigue.

For our 2nd city, I'm considering A1/A2, C, and E.

City Spots:
[A] A1 looks great, though I wish it were a water tile so A2 would be even better. Both A1 and A2 are Plains Hills with wet Corn and they can share grass Cows with the capital - they're dream city spots!
Unfortunately, all of the land around us looks amazing, so we have to consider other city spots, too.

[B] This city spot wouldn't have access to Cows until T50 and it would take too much time for a Worker to start improving it, but a PH with Floods Plains and the ability to share Cows can be a good early city.

[C] I was planning for this to be my 3rd city, but with the Copper SE of Elephants, I'm considering settling on the Elephants. But then we delay Cows to T50 again...

[D] Would be good for a later city, but A1 breaks it. That's not enough for me to say no to A1, but worth considering.

[E] I wasn't considering E until the Copper showed up. It could start its own Work Boat right away, better than the Warriors A1/A2/C would spend production on. Also, A2 breaks this city spot. More reason for A1 > A2.

Current plan: Send Scout to A2 and fortify. The turn after Settler arrives to A2, send Scout to A1. If no animals bordering, send Settler to A1, else settle A2.

What are your thoughts on the land and any city spots?
