Epic Forty-two: Summer Breeze - Reports

Yeah, I realized early on that 16-19 spt wasn't gonna compete very well, and gradually started shifting my thinking to the Diplo route. Unfortuntately, while focusing on that, I was pretty careless with the Happy Citizens count, which affected my score. I kept almost everyone happy most of the game, but didn't really focus on maximizing my population like I should have. But it was fun, and I've learned some lessons for a real 20K attempt in the (near?) future.

Yay! I win most smiley award, lol.

Yeah, my brain was pretty... messed up, oh, and I did eventually upgrade all my NMs to Infantry.

I'm also going for a second report, even though I haven't taken many notes or ss's so far.

So far everythings going pretty good, considering my head continues to run at room temperature B)

I have to say that I enjoy the games over here at RBCiv much more than the GOTM stuff at CFC. Over here I know I am playing on a level playing field against players with honorable playing habits and are playing for all the right reasons.

I can't wait for the next Epic, win, lose or draw.

You enjoy RBCiv more because it's a more "elite" group than CFC. But as you may have noticed the activity might be a little lower here. smile

I guess I came too late. I started playing CIV3 only mid last year, and missed the Golden Age of CIV players. I learned a lot from reading those game reports written years ago, and I wish I could have a chance to play with those people again.

I don't enjoy RBC because it is more elite. I enjoy RBC for the reasons that makes it more elite. Honesty, creativity, respect, and honor... some old fashioned values that mean a lot to me. Some of the players here are great. Others like myself are average. But for everyone it is the manner in which a journey is made rather than the end result. So much of what goes on at GOTM is about winning at any cost. What good is it if you gain the whole world but lose your soul? So what if you win a competition but use every exploit known to man and several uinknown in order to win.

(I sent most of this in PM to Kylearan a while back.)

Regarding the rule bending with the workers: That was possible all along, of course. Basically, I wanted to leave a way to make manual spot improvements when necessary, such as clearing a particular square for an irrigation path (like you did.) Automated workers tend to irrigate much more than mine anyway, so I figured manually-ordered Ctrl-I irrigation in the late game wouldn't make much difference.

The only rule I didn't like was the "keep the lux slider at least at 50%" rule.

I had several reasons for the luxury slider rule:

- The theme, of course.

- To make a lightweight Monarch game a bit more interesting by keeping the player's research lead down to half an age or so. Didn't slow you down, Kylearan, but it did for some other players. smile I also hoped it'd make the Philosophy-Republic jump less of an automatic choice, although the player's civ starting with Alphabet was enough of a lead in that direction that the research restriction couldn't overcome.

- To help ease strategy choices between players. (Yes, it does limit the strategic arsenal.) Instead of constantly wondering whether you should put the slider low for economic growth or high for scenario score, you could pretty much leave it in one place.

- To lengthen the game by slowing research. Instead of everyone winning votes in the 1300s or launching in the 1500s, it gives a bit more time for the scenario score to accumulate. If you could've won the vote in exactly 1700, it looks like I nailed that dead-on. smile

I think you were the only one to get a Great Leader all game? Pity, since I spent some minutes when making the game to look up some Caribbean pirates for the list of leaders... smile Did anyone get a Scientific leader?

I don't think a revolt to Communism would have helped the scenario score. It was easier to just cash rush improvements in cities that needed them, and loss of the Republic trade boost would've meant a serious dent in happiness from the lluxury slider.

*slaps self* Ouch, and I failed to notice this! Since it had been my first SGL ever, I never paid attention to his name.

Cute detail, thanks. smile

Results for this Epic have been posted. I realize that participation in the Epics is down a bit these days, but I did want to say that I really enjoyed the helpful and collaborative atmosphere that I found here in this discussion thread.

I never finished this game. I got sort of fed up around 1000 A.D. and quit. I had a large empire (most everyone did, I was surprised to see a 700 shield palace) and a lot of happy people, but my game plan wasn't working. I was going for my first ever civ-wide cultural win, but England started to catch up and eventually passed the 1/2-way mark with a lot of cpt. The fact that happiness comes from the buildings that don't give as much culture (temples, colosseums, Cathedrals) is largely to blame. I easily did the republic gambit and quickly contacted the world. I even got a scientific leader upon researching a tech (it was either MM or Literature). He was used for the Hanging Gardens (a nice score boost) which launched my GA (in Republic) and let me hand build TGL and TGLighthouse in Grand Cayman. I later got Sistine's with ease and was on my way to getting J.S. Bach's when the French sneak-attacked. I was playing a farmer's gambit and almost lost, but luckily a few rushed NuMercs prevented the loss of any cities. I got tired of the game and the idiotic workers though. I like to MM my workers too much.

Wow, I finished the Epic for my second time using a more... formidable strategy. And I did a lot better too, also comparing the amount of wars.

1st Time - 10 or so wars
2nd Time - 2

I haven't finished a report yet, but when I do, I'll post up a link.

My score for this time was:

Happy Citizens @ 1700 AD - 801.1
Victory - 100 (Diplomatic)
Penalty - 10 (I took the Indian gem city)

Total Score = 891.1

Edit - I won the game in 1814 AD.
