Yes, rocks could be interesting for no weapons. It drops (one of) their poor fields allowing them to concentrate on others. Although they are slow to research generally, they can use their good computer tech for stealing and need less in Planetology, as you mention. On diseases, they are more likely to get Death Spores but Doom Virus is still against odds since rocks often get Advanced Soil (and Advanced ECO). Sounds a fun challenge!
