Little update:

I'm going to settle city #4 (Settler in 5 turns) at the Clam site to the west to get some commerce going. Diplomacy is heating up too. Interesting times.

Any updates? What's your plan in the war?

My plan should be to abandon the game as soon as possible wink . But let's see if I can have some fun first wink .

So what went so wrong in your game? You can't just blame it on your food resource being 4/2/0 compared to 5/0/0. Were the surrounding lands no good? Did you gamble too much on being able to rush and then not find a good target? Or did you just play a bit rubbish?

Well, I have no food around at all. My land sports 1 irrigated rice, a plains sheep, an unirrigated corn and a clam - over a stretch of 40 tiles horizontal and 20 vertical. And of course I wanted to rush someone, but with Rome next to me and the other Civs miles away it was just not possible at all...

We must be looking at a different map then; I have a picture of your start, and there are 7 different food resources within 5 tiles north/south and 10 tiles east/west of your opening settler. [Image: smile.gif] And at least that many more food resources just slightly beyond those borders. I concur that the grassland cattle should have been a rice or pigs tile (hindsight is 20/20), but honestly, this location isn't THAT much different than the others. As sooooo said, 4/2/0 against 5/0/0 cannot be a gamebreaker.

Maybe I'm too naive about CIV, but I just don't see it. With strong allies keeping you at tech parity, your military flexibility, and lots of still-open land (certainly not useless, whatever you think of its relative quality) I refuse to believe that the Legendary Builder can't pull together the cities and infrastructure needed to get back into this game. If there's not enough nearby food for your tastes, perhaps you can find a way to snag some from further away, or set up a less-food-dependant economy.

True, you had to abandon your original plan, but that isn't the same thing as losing - and if it comes to that, Aggressive Knights or Cavalry or the like could be as much fun to play with as Aggressive Impis, if you can set yourself up for it by that stage of the game. I don't think it matters how much of the problem to this point was the map, how much was politics, and how much was planning gone awry - the net result (it seems to me) is a challenge, not a catastrophe.

(Of course, to "have some fun first" - whether before or by or while growing stronger in the game - does sound to me like a great idea, and indeed the whole point of the game!)

Hmmm, the only problem is, there aren't "Aggressive Knights or Cavalry". Only melee and gunpowder units get free combat 1 promos. rolleye
