Thanks, Sareln! I'll get cracking on the next plan!

Size 5 - 18 Food

Growth: If I don't build another settler or worker, I'll grow in 7 turns after I finish the worker if I continue to work the elephant. If I switch to the corn, I lose two hammers but gain 1 food and 1 gold. On top of that, I'll have if farmed too, adding three more food. If i switch to the corn (which I probably will do) it will take 5 turns to get a warrior.

I wish I had a memory that could memorize everything. Fortunately, I decided to download the Mac version of CIV for this week anyways (it's downloading as i write). Once that downloads, I will create a sandbox to figure out the fastest way to get out a warrior, workboat, warrior, settler. I'd really like another worker too....

Man, this is why I do't think as much in my SP games... so many decisions and so many factors...

I've been trying to work on the MM to figure out the best plan but, as I mentioned previously, this is not my strong point. I've worked out what I think would be the timetable for going Fishing before Mining/BW and a workboat after a warrior. I'm concerned that it will take too long to get my first settler out that way. The work boat itself would only take 5 turns. But that puts forest chops further away too...

Well, Scooter emailed me to say we've met in game, though I haven't seen it yet myself. Here's his email:

Quote:Dazedroyalty,

Greetings! No that is not a mistake - we have actually met in-game as of the beginning of Turn4 which I just played a little bit ago. You'll see my warrior just to the south of your capital when the turn gets around to you. It seems we are VERY close together off the start, though I have yet to meet anyone else. The map seems to promise a very interesting start so far, so I'm sure there will be many more surprises for us!

How have things been for you thus far? Have you met anyone else yet? I've got to run after I send this, but don't hesitate to catch me on chat one of these times if you'd like to talk directly at all.

Since I hadn't see the game yet, it's hard to respond. Here's what I sent:

Quote:Scooter,

It is indeed a pleasure to meet you in game, and, as you note, interesting given that it has only been 4 turns! I actually cannot tell you much since Sareln has not sent me pics from the most recent turn. Before that, though I had not met anyone.

Let's stay in touch!

I am concerned because if Scooter indeed has a warrior directly next to my borders, I will NOT be able to get back in time to defend should he choose to go to war. It's hard to say until I can see in game myself. I messaged Sareln so he knows what's up and to make sure he send me pics before I decide what to do.

Clearly, this means that we are VERY close to each other if he could get to me by T4. I didn't expect that quick of contact. Well, worker first may really come back to bite me in the butt!

In other news, I gave up on doing and Excel analysis and instead replayed the start in my sand box twice to find out the effect of going Fishing before mining/BW. My settler will get out 3 turns faster without going fisher first. In the long run, it might cost me a little on the growth curve, but given how close we are on the map, I'm even MORE inclined to get that settler out ASAP! So, it's pretty much decided, mining and then BW after Agriculture. Also, since it is close, I need to claim some metal ASAP. The other option is to plant towards Scooter and research Archery to defend it....

Interesting times. I'll keep you up to date.

I'm excited that I was able to get an old PBEM turn to work on the Mac! We'll see if it can work with the new turn. If it does, that'll be good (though I need to figure out how in the world to take a screen shot with a MacBook!)

Sareln deserves tons of thanks for stepping up to help out. It was weighing on me that I had initiated the game and then wasn't going to be able to play the first week. He's stepped up and filled in the gap. So whether it works or if he has to keep helping out until Sunday, +1 for Sareln! (Maybe I can convince you, Sareln, to be a dedicated lurker in case I need a sub later???? I realize the temptation to follow the other threads is pretty strong...)

Sareln sent me pictures from the last turn:

We've found the other coast. I wouldn't be surprised if this is some sort of modified ring map. Too early to say for sure. Unfortunately this picture also makes it clear that there is no way my warrior can get back in time to defend if Scooter decides to come at me. His warrior must be on one of the hills because if he was on the grasslands we would not have made contact.

I can switch to a warrior and it'd build before he got there (4 hammers/turn means three turns to build. I have to start it now though. I'd really rather not switch. Hopefully Scooter will respond soon.

Diplomatically speaking, if I demand that he not move towards my borders it means that I am a house of glass. I could simply ask that he not move directly next to my borders in order to make his intentions clear.

It doesn't look like anyone has grown yet or built any new units.

I think this is what I'll send Scooter:

Quote:Scooter,

I would like to make a simple proposal in order to establish a good working relationship. Since we are so close to each other it will beneficial to have some reassurances of peace. Personally, I'm not a big fan of NAPs, though I'd be open to considering that if you would like. Instead, I would suggest that we commit to not moving directly next to each other's borders for the first 20 turns. If you'd be interested in such an arrangement or would like to propose another, let me know.

Do you have any thoughts about the map? It's still too early to tell but I can see that there is at least some kind of islands going on.

Kind words Dazed, I'd be happy to stay on as a dedicated lurker when you get back. Playing both FfH and BTS at the same time can get one a little wonky, but I'm sure I'll manage lol.

I still haven't heard back from Scooter. His normal playing time is roughly the same as mine (evenings EST) which might be a problem if he doesn't get back to his email before the turn comes to me. Then I have to decide what to do. Most likely I will switch to warrior, and switch off until he does respond. I need that warrior eventually so that's okay. The downside, obviously, is delaying the worker to get out. I'd really rather not delay but I would even more rather not be eliminated.

Sareln, thanks for being a dedicated lurker! I know there will be some weeks in September and October when I travel for work and a similar arrangement then would be awesome!
