Could it be TEAM is just living up to their "TEAM" name? Also, things like talking one way while acting another are just going to piss them off further. So even if we don't work with them, I really don't think doing a NAP + pink dot is a good idea. In fact, I bet 1) TEAM won't do a NAP and 2) if we did they would break the NAP and declare on us anyway.

I agree with Davey on the NAP's. They tie your hands down way to much. And you can be friends without a NAP, even if that takes a bit more time.
How about a short, to the point, reply:
Quote:Hi TEAM,
Not quite the reply we expected...
We would like to work with you as well, as we said in our earlier message, but got misinterpreted.
Again: We would like to work with you and build a trusting friendship.
So, where shall we start?

Yeah agreed, NAPs suck hard.
I'd probably respond by saying that we were being quite honest in saying we simply don't like NAPs and if they take that as a sign of hostility they can suck it (they seem to like blunt diplo, we can do that as well I'd say). But if their willing to get past that and go look back at our message, they'll realize we proposed everything possible at this point in the game: info about the map. Let's offer to trade screenshots here and then point out that at this point in the game there's not much more we can do diplo wise besides say when we meet other civs (which we haven't) and trade screenshots.

I do think our reply was kind of vague, but that message from them is way over the top. I feel like they're pressuring us to be either permanent allies or enemies right away, and I don't want to be either one.
We could try proposing a border to them, and see if they'll agree?

blunt does not have to mean antagonistic or rude. friendly and open-minded does not have to mean vague.

Why not be blunt back something along the lines of:
"You want blunt? Here you go:
1. The team in general doesn't like NAPs so we won't be signing them with anybody this game
2. Have not met anybody else yet, so don't know how near everybody else is, and what terrain between us is like
3. All things being equal we would like to team with you guys over the others, but if we find out, for example, all our land sucks except straight in your direction, then that isn't gonna work.
4. Have no intention currently to be cocks and settle in your face or choke you, so don't worry there
5. At this point in the game, there isn't much we can do except meaningless pleasantries. By all means if you have a proposal on something right now, then let us have it"

I say we go with Nakor's message. Be blunt and honest but not a jerk.
More people have been to Berlin than I have.

Agree. KISS seems the best philosophy for diplo with TEAM

Slightly altered version:

We would like to work with you as well, as we said in our earlier message, but got misinterpreted.
Again: We would like to work with you and build a trusting friendship.

We can share screenshots and discuss a border? Notify the other is we meet another team? Not a lot more to do at this point.
Cheers,
Nakor
