Turn 48

Loaded the save and found an offer for white peace. Checked the domestic advisor, because I thought maybe he backed out...nope. He razed my nice shiny city of Kaylee. Well, screw you. Declined. Another white peace offer? Decline. A third? Really? Decline.

Found he placed a nice pink dot right in my sphere of influence. I zoomed back so you can see where it is in relation to our capitals.

It's about the midpoint between our two capitals, but on my side of the geographical border, and he could have just diverted his settler and settled further north. Instead, he razed my city and gave me a middle finger. Maybe he thought because I sucked it up when HAK did it to me in PB25 that I would do so now -- well, HAK didn't raze a city when he did it, which made it, if not more palatable, at least less offensive. Nope, we are at war until that city is gone.

Moved my vulture forward one tile so I could see his phalanx, which was UNDAMAGED. banghead Well, I guess a warrior isn't much threat to a phalanx. However, when I looked at the odds for my vulture to attack, I got 35%??? WTF? dubious.gif This confused me, because I was expecting 50% odds.

Vulture: 6 attack, +25% vs melee units = 7.5 attack vs melee units
Phalanx: 5 attack, +50% vs melee units = 7.5 attack vs melee units

Unfortunately, I did some research with Cyneheard's combat calculator, and it turns out that's not how it works. Instead, the smaller bonus (vulture's) is subtracted from the larger bonus (phalanx's), and then the unit with the larger bonus gets the difference. Which means despite intuition saying we should be equal, his phalanxes actually still get a 25% bonus to their attack, making it 6 vs 6.25. duh That is...sub-optimal. I thought I had an axe-equivalent unit with slightly better odds against archers, and it turns out that is not the case.

Well, if I take peace right now I might as well quit the game because that city will haunt me and I'll probably never have an opportunity to attack when he is not prepared for it. Right now neither one of us was expecting a war, so we're both scrambling, which gives us parity. Unfortunately, it's going to butt-f$&# both of us because we'll both end up going full war mode and our compatriots will zoom ahead of us, but this is his fault for being a dick.

Anyway, I moved my vulture onto the forested gem hill (and I will gladly take those odds against his phalanx).

I moved the vulture produced in Zoe forward one so his phalanx can't threaten it and it can move onto the hill with the other one next turn.

Wash had just finished building a granary, so I followed that up with a vulture build, put Zoe onto building another vulture, and when Captain Mal finishes its settler next turn, it will be building vultures as well. Neither one of us has horses, so spears are a waste. Whips all around next turn.

To add an additional insult, I sent an offer of peace with the demand that he give me his new city. Hopefully he will get the message that there will be no peace so long as that city exists. Prepare for blood, my spectators! hammer The good thing about this is that there are not a lot of variables involved in fighting this war, so hopefully I can't screw it up too much.

Better make sure Wash us guarded well. Those barbarians are ruthless.

She's not dead, just wounded. We've got a doctor, don't worry.

Yeah, I'm thinking about leaving one Vulture in the west just to handle barbs.

Turn 49

Adrian offered me peace again, and I declined. Sorry dude, I am not in such a disadvantageous position that I have to take it. Yes, in the long run this war is going to screw both of us, but I hold a grudge when you something so dickish. bash I am willing to blow my chances to win in order to hose your chances to win by forcing you to either fight a neverending war with me or to offer up something significant in exchange for peace, which at a minimum is that city. The only way I'm taking peace without that concession is when you are militarily powerful enough to kill my civ anyway.

Looks like Adrian brought forward another phalanx, and has them surrounding his city.

I'm actually ok with this, because it spreads his guys out. It gives me an opportunity to defeat them in detail if I can get enough forces combined and to get a nice protected spot adjacent to his new city.

I moved my second vulture up to that hill, so there are two there now. No chance he's dislodging them with even 3 phalanxes. I also put all my EPs into Adrian (should have done it last turn, but forgot -- was splitting them between Adrian and Sian).

Speaking of Sian, his Impi on my western border was barb hunting:

I moved the vulture produced by Wash 1SW to the forest to be ready to either defend against the Impi (if Sian got froggy and decided to try to mess with Wash) or to take out the barb if he stepped inside my territory.

Instead, as the turn ended, the barb attacked Sian's Impi and lost. I'm sad I didn't get the XP, but appreciate the assistance!

Captain Mal produced a settler, and I'm trying to decide what to do with him. Do I:
1) Settle him west on the Elephants and use that Vulture as an escort.
2) Settle him SE near the horses on that narrow strip of land west of the barbarian city (where the barb warrior is standing, 1SE of the horses).

If I choose 1, I get access to Gold, Elephants and horses, plus I don't really have to worry about Adrian doing anything to that city.
If I choose 2, I get access to Horses, and I can, in the future, move ships into the lake, but it's much closer to the front and at more risk of Adrian attacking it.

I think 1 is the better choice.

Turn 50

Nothing too exciting this round. Adrien offered me peace twice. I declined both.

He killed the warrior I had sitting on a forested hill watching his worker with a phalanx, which is not really a huge deal except for him getting XP for it. But until I could shift my vultures (which I was able to do this round) I didn't want him to be able to slip a phalanx around my northern flank.

Zoe produced a vulture the old-fashioned way, and I whipped one in Captain Mal and Wash. All three cities are building more, and I'll be whipping Zoe next turn (and doesn't that sound dirty).

The vulture Wash produced two turns ago is going to escort the settler to my new city in the west, which should get built around T55.
