I definately will have a shot with Pyramids. My neighbors are NylesStandish and Yuris. Former is a newbie that hasn't played any earlier games. Seems to have as slow expansion rate as I have. Not sure what is his excuse, but it is highly likely he is average player at best. Yuris has played several games reporting very scaresly in them. Pretty much always something has gone wrong so probably below average player. In this game he seems to be expanding very fast up to at least 7 cities already (haven't been following that actively). I've 4 (5 next turn). Based on seeing him working grassland tile every now and then he hasn't have sufficient worker support for his cities.

Also both haven't been building military that is obvivously improving our relative position in this game and very good for my chances too.

What are you planning to do with the 500 gold?

No plans. It will be consumed for teching probably in this order Maths-IW-Currency.

Pyramids were just stupid gambit. I didn't adapt well after spotting that there are plenty of forests and lots of stone tiles around. I should have focused on getting it via chopping. Now I just need to go back to basics. In this case it means chopping those forests to settlers and workers and see where I'm after filling up the land dedicated to me. Great persons are only secondary importance in the near future, but I will be aggressively working specialists after T100 trying to get some kind of tech advantage over my neighbors.

Finally something to report. Noticed few turns ago that GLH is still up for grabs so decided to take a shot. That worked out. At the moment it isn't that valuable since I don't have island cities and none of my neighbors has bothered to research Alphabet. Also I just got currency so more reasons to grab Alpha ASAP. Will land also Moai next turn meaning big increase to my score i.e. I'll probably end up baing momentarily in top 3 wink. In reality my position is pretty firmly in the middle of the pack. Losing Pyramids ruined a lot of my chances.

I haven't really used Philosophical. Academy could have been useful, but in the end I decided that filling up the land is more important.

Again I've a very detailed plan:
* Fill up the land (Still room for ~6 cities)
* Spam forges, farms and workshops + Build wealth to speed up reasearching
* Run some specialists for bulbs/1st Golden age
* Tech Alpha-HBR-CoL-...-Guilds (roughly in this order)
* Build army of HAs or Knights
* Attack the neighbor looking weaker

I'm too lazy count even roughly when I'm going to get the needed techs. At least it shouldn't take too long to fill up my land. I've pretty much settled all the decent cities and rest will be mainly fillers.

It seems we're in serious business sooner than I hoped for. NylesStandish's power has been rapidly raising. He also is building a road towards my border city and strangely left his Galley trapped inside my borders, even if I offered OB. Not quite sure if he has invested on HBR or Construction or both. Probably sizaeable stack of Cats would be most problematic since my border city won't fall without them and as long as I've the border city the war will be total failure for Nyles.

I'll research HBR too to make it possible to get some decent units from my southern cities to north as fast as possible.
